bad reaction to yogurt?

I think my 3 year old may be having a bad reaction to the yogurt??

I've been really confused with him, which is funny, because we're

doing this diet for our 5 year old ASD son. has not had

digestive or neurological problems, but we have him (and too)

pretty much on SCD, though not completely 100% like Luke (give

regular milk to drink sometimes, allow some sugar free but illegal

jelly, just little things like that). He loves the yogurt but I'm

thinking he's reacting bad to it. Does that happen? He's always had

dairy, his whole life, it's not that. I know it's not part of the

intro diet but I wanted to start having some myself and I give him

milkshakes with it, etc, and like I said, he's not REALLY on the diet

for any problems. I guess I'm wondering why someone WOULD react

badly? I can't pinpoint the problem - he just seems off and has

redness around his lips, but that's not all... I can't really explain

what it is. Plus I'm exhausted so forgive me for not being clear.

Guess the short question is, is it normal to have difficulty with the

yogurt and why would that be? What would that look like?

Thanks,

in NC

It is possible and does happen for kids to react to the heavy dose

of probiotics in the yogurt - they are displacing something in the

gut. Does he have any stool problems (now new with yogurt, or in

the past?) Does he have a headache, body aches, low fever,

lethargy? Those can be die off symptoms.

Someone else may have more specific ideas. To me, its mostly a

guessing game, but my (long distance and unscientific) guess in

this case is that it might be some die-off or adjustment to the good

bacteria in the yogurt now flooding his gut.

This should go away in a few days or week. Or you can try cutting

the amount of yogurt back that he gets (or all out) for a week or

so, and see if that helps.

Hi Micheele,

What do you mean by a bad reaction? When not doing 100% SCD it is

hard to tell what is causing the problem. My kids were almost 100%

for a long time but not until I had them both 100% SCD did it make a

difference. And that is 100% SCD as per BTVC. Once I did that the

difference was amazing.

Considering the fact that he has no problem with other diary and is

not on the diet, I would think his reaction could be die-off. The

homemade yogurt is causing a battle between the good and the bad.

This is bound to have some effects on your son. Just because he may

not seem to have a yeast problem may not mean it does not exist. My

whole family went on the diet in support of my autistic and celiac

son. The other 4 of us have been experiencing different symptoms of

die-off which really surprised us. We had no idea.
