Guest guest
Don't forget about using Epson Salt Baths to help with the phenol problems. That took care of my son's phenolic reactions when we first began the diet. He doesn't have a problem anymore so we don't need epson salt baths everyday anymore. My son is doing really really well. No more diarrhea, no more stomachaches. His behavior is incredible. He is growing taller and taller and looks healthier and healthier. Almost wouldn;t be able to tell if he has issues. Now I am thinking of taking him off meds but want to have a backup in case it backfires on me. Carolyn Phenol Theory My son has a huge problem with phenols too. I was also very skeptical about the ability of doing this diet because of this. I put him on the starter diet w/pear juice gelatin (instead of grape), chicken, hamburg, eggs and cooked carrots. I also gave a no-phenol in the beginning. We've been on the diet for 6 weeks now and he can tolerate phenolic foods in moderation. I see the cheeks and ears go red w/spinach, bananas and some squashes. Overall I'd say it's improved however, on this diet. I would start out as suggested and look at the allowable foods see what's high in phenols and limit those foods initially, then try them one at a time in small portions to see if there's a reaction. Good luck - it's doable! Colleen (mom to Mason 4yrs - HFA) " Difficulties are things that show what men are. " Epictetus

Colleen - this note on red cheeks and ears caught my attention. Sometimes my sons will have one red cheek and ear - is this the kind of thing you are talking about? Are you suggesting that it's due to something they recently ate? Ann
Guest guest
Red cheeks/ears is a classic phenol reaction, HTH. Luke will not ALWAYS get the red cheeks along w/ the behavioral reaction, but often does - it literally looks like someone colored him with rouge. Guest guest
Colleen, It's just that it's taken so much effort to finally get veggies into him, I hate to drop them out now due to phenols! Also, the low-phenol fruits -- pear and banana -- just happen to be two fruits he cannot stand. I guess I could hide them in his other foods instead of the veggies, but really I'm uncertain that phenols are even the problem. I've been sort of waiting for the no-fenol (legal) to be ready. I would sooner try that rather than step back from the gains in eating he's just made!! It's hard enough now as I took out nuts and yogurt for a trial too. Thanks,
