Guest guest
Hi there, I'm a bit confused about what you say about " only to the extent of removing starches " . Are you following the diet as outlined in BTVC? Meanwhile, let me tell you that making yogurt is easy! You have to get the hang of it, but now it takes me 20 - 25 minutes and here is how I do it: Pour 2 litres of milk into a saucepan. Cover. Heat on medium high for 15 mins. Check temp. It needs to be 85 deg. Celsius. Remove from heat. Put into a cold water bath. Cool to about 100 degrees (there are a few differing opinions here -- Elaine cools hers to room temp.). Put about 1/2 cup of the cooled milk into my Yogourmet yogurt maker. Add yogurt starter (I use CP yogurt starter -- it's yummy). Stir well. Add in the rest of the milk and stir well again. Put the yogurt making jar into the yogurt maker, adding water following the instructions that come with the yogurt maker. Plug in and ferment for 24 hours. If you go to Elaine's website breakingtheviciouscycle.info, or to pecanbread, there are directions for making yogurt, and even pictures! Happy yogurting -- and remember, use goat milk! Guest guest
" We've had him on the SCD diet for 2 months but only to the extent of removing starches (rice, potatoes, corn) since we already had removed gluten. " Could you please explain this just a bit? Did you start with the intro diet and add foods slowly? Or did you just basically switch from GFCF to SCD legal foods? I would suggest that you go back to the beginning, add foods slowly, seed/peel/cook fruits and veggies and allow the gut healing to take place... THEN add the goat yogurt made with CP yogurt starter. And Sue is right. There are pictorial guides for making yogurt on both http://www.pecanbread.com and http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info Jody mom to -5.1 and -7.
Guest guest
It's not as hard as it seems at first. After a few batches, you'll be able to make yogurt with your eyes shut! I bought a Yogourmet maker after Katera had been on the diet about 2 months. I own a dehydrator but haven't used it for SCD yet. I don't own an ice cream maker. I think it depends on your child and what types of foods you know you'll need to provide to keep him compliant. Don't get too overwhelmed right now, though...... you can add those gadgets after you're more used to the whole thing. If you want to start yogurt, though..... I highly recommend the Yogourmet. I love mine. It *should* last 3 weeks if you only dip into it with a clean spoon..... and keep it in the rear, coldest spot in your fridge. A 2 qt batch of yogurt lasts me only one week..... because we eat it all up! I am on SCD along with Katera....... and my 16 yr old son eats the yogurt just because he likes it...... so we don't have issues over how long it will last. You can make a one qt. half-batch w/ the Yogourmet, BTW. There is a chance that he cannot tolerate it yet, it seems to me you haven't implemented the diet for the full 100% yet? In the meantime, a very safe option is nut yoghurt. Recipe on www.pecanbread.com, under almond/hazelnut yoghurt. Some people try this yoghurt and find it very tasty, and surprisingly easy to make. For this you do need a yoghurt maker of course and a sturdy blender. Marjan Netherlands mom to Nick,7, scd since jan 18 2003
Guest guest
I bought the Yogourmet one and made a few batches with regular milk. It's pretty easy - just follow the directions and keep an eye on the temperaturel It came out delicious, but I'm one of those odd people who loves plain yogurt. > > > YOGURT QUESTION: > My son has been on a gluten/casine/etc. etc. diet for 2 years.
