Guest guest
Cristy, While using up the stock of supplements you just bought, you can spend the next month finding replacements for the illegal ones and switch her diet to the SCD by removing the starches and illegal foods. You may have to use up what's in the house and tell her " all gone " when you run out (and don't buy any more). During this time, you can try making some of the recipes on Pecanbread.com and get the knack for baking with new ingredients. Also, if you haven't already done so, read the Pecanbread.com website (all of it). For picky eaters who refuse veggies, we usually recommend sneaky veggie pancakes (no nuts). Also, there are recipes for chicken cupcakes, with veggies in them. Also, meatloaf, meat balls, chicken nuggets all made with cooked pureed veggies in them. Hamburgers can also have cooked pureed veggies hidden in them. Since she has been CF, we don't normally recommend introducing dairy for a few months. That way you will be able to tell if any negative things are due to the dairy or not. If you reintroduce dairy right away, you could mistakenly think she is reacting to it when she is just going through the die-off period. I would not recommend starting with nut products right away. Parents have reported having much better success with the diet by starting with the intro. Welcome to the list! Guest guest
Hi Cristy, I have a very picky daughter who ate meat and fruit and nothing else at the beginning of SCD. It was hard, but the gains were worth it. It is recommended that you start with the intro diet, if at all possible. And for sure, skip the dairy for a couple of months. And when you do try it, if you want to, you need to start with goat. Finally after 10 months, eats a few bites of vegetables (straight up) at dinner. I have managed a few sneaky pancakes, but in general, she doesn't like pancakes at all! This is a wonderful, healthy way of eating. Welcome. Sue (from Pickering) Mom to , 4, formerly? Guest guest
Hi Cristy-- It is recommended for ASD kids to wait at least 12 weeks before trying the goat milk yogurt so you can hang on for now on that one. There are some good suggestions for picky eaters on pecanbread.com and many of us hide veggies in things like meatloaf, sneaky pancakes made w/ chicken and eggs and veggies, etc. You should also be aware that many don't respond well in the early stages of the diet using nut flours. Start slowly and try using nut butters first would be my advice. Don't worry if you can't do the intro diet right now, you can do it later. Use the stages of the diet on pecanbread.com as a really helpful guide on what foods to introduce at what times. As far as the supps go, it is ultimately every parents decision on how to start SCD initially. We took about a month to gradually work in substitutions for my son's favorites and pretty much stopped all his supplements as he wasn't getting any visible benefit from them anyway. To give SCD the best chance to heal your daughter, you should do it 100% supplements and all. Good luck! Guest guest
If I can't use the cottage cheese & she won't touch eggs then > how do i do the first part of the diet? My son would not (and still will not) eat eggs that look like eggs (scrambled, fried, hard boiled, etc). He also would not eat squash when we started SCD. However, I made the " sneaky pancakes " with eggs, butternut squash, cinnamon, vanilla, and he ate them up, and asked for more!!! And this was an after school snack! The sneaky pancake recipe is on pecanbread.com in the recipe section. Also chicken pancakes. Also, I believe there is a section on Pecanbread on the INTRO DIET FOR ASD - slightly modified from the book (mostly due to many kids coming from GFCF and/or with known reactions to dairy). Good luck. -- Sue, mom to Adam (6, ASD) and (8, n/t, gut issues) SCD 3 months
