Hi all.

Last week my doc took me off tramadol and flexaril (finally!) and put

me on ms contin er, 15mg. After almost three days I'm getting much

better and more consistent pain relief.

The question I have is: is this an appropriate next step from the max

dose of tramadol, flexaril twice a day, and a total of three 5mg

vicodin? Quite honestly, I didn't know ms contin was morphine until I

got home with the meds and started reading.

This was the best conversation I've had with my doc about what kind of

constant pain I have, and the most honest I've been with him about how

limited and frustrated I am by it. I told him after four years the

tramadol didn't do anything, and the vicodin was like taking tylenol. I

did finally say that, since the kids are grown and I can't work anyway,

that I was ready to stop worrying about taking narcotics during the day.

Is this too much, too fast? I'm 40 and have however many years of life

left, and worry about if I'm taking this now what will my situation be

in 20 years? Maybe I'm just thinking about it too much.

It's fine. It's not a high dose, really. And with all the meds I'm on, (9

schedule II opioids), I think you've got a lot of breathing room. :)

I'm glad your doc finally gave you some relief.

IF it's helping now you will get to a point, probably, that you are even

more functional than you are right nonw.

It takes awhile but long term treatment is really good for some people, me

included.

It also makes you not have to think about dealing with the pain on a hour to

hour basis.

I too take MS Contin and been on it for the past 5yrs. I found nothing else

worked for me and had to turn to the morphine. I still have break through pain

and use percocet when needed. I feel you have to do what is right for you and

what may help your pain problems.
