Guest guest
Absolutely. I don't think you even have to believe in statistic -- just visit a classroom of deaf/hoh kids and you will likely see SID in great abundance. You probably know already, there is a LOT of denial amount deaf/hoh parents about the condition. I'll even go out on a limb and add that this particular list is not -- in my view, " SID-friendly " and as such, I would recommend the Sensory Integration Dysfunction list at onelist.com. That's not to say there aren't a few who speak up and acknowledge such -- but we are surely in the minority here (mho). I hope you'll join the SID list -- it's *excellent* -- a very diverse group. (If you need more specifics on how to join, e-mail me for details). Best to you! Dana rodgers@... I have a beautiful nine year old girl with a severe hearing loss, but this is only one challenge for her. She was also diagnosed as having sensory issues, tactile being the main one and has been in private OT therapy dealing with Sensory-Integration from age four to eight. She also has had behavioral and social problems since she was three, and has been screened twice for ADD, and meeting all of the impulsivity issues. At this point I am wondering if some of these issues are common with hearing-impaired children with nerve damage, or if some things--behavior,or tactile could be influenced by her inability to hear from birth on. I would appreciate any feedback regarding similar experiences from other parents as I am overloaded with " professional " input. > >Thanks, > >Sharon > >>All messages posted to this list are private and confidential. Guest guest
Hello Suzette!! Is she in school? If so does she use an Fm system? uses the aids and the FM system and boy, what a diffrence!! He loves them! How do your other children do with ? I've noticed that my 4 yr old daughter has a nasal sound to some of her words. I dont know if its from listening to her brother or just something shes having difficulty with. Have a great day! J. --- Pamaners@... wrote: > Welcome ! Guest guest
, Welcome! I absolutely agree, if you're going to have newborn screening, there have to be supports in place to go from there. My audiologist was fabulous at giving me the info as I needed it: it was she who directed me to call my EI program first (even gave me the number), as well as info about hearing aid places and programs for HOH infants. I am curious about what benefits your insurance company is not providing for your children. So far, my HMO has covered everything but the hearing aids, which I know are the biggest thing. We also have too much money to qualify for aid, and I am horrified they are not a covered benefit. Isn't hearing at least as important as seeing? And for someone who needs them to learn language -- well, let's just leave it that I was horrified. Anyway, I think a whole process would need to be developed, and I think the only people who will care enough are those who have been affected by it, especially since it's such a low incidence situation. Anyway, welcome! Guest guest
, Welcome to the list. I have a 8 month old daughter who also has a mild hearing loss. I knew something was wrong from the get go but the doctor had told me that Madelyn probally just had a attitude problem. This was when she was a month old. I also have a 6 year old son. I was told not to compare the two. I did of course.Madelyn was not startling to sounds. I never looked for that in my son. I guess he just did it and I never thought anything about it. I am like you. I have learned so much from the list. Elaine D.

Also, congrats on the upcoming marriage! I would love to go somewhere with just the closets family members and do the wild thing! My friend is getting married in May in Maui on the beach...what more could a person want? Have fun on the cruise, they're amazing if you've never been...HIGHLY recommended by me! LOVE THEM! New Member From: KWyman9999@... Hi! I am a new member. I had my first appointment at Brigham & Women's in Boston on Wednesday and go back for a surgical consult on 2/28. I am 43 years old, 5'4 " , weigh 338 and have a BMI of 60. I have been overweight since the 6th grade (from 225 to 400 pounds). My friend Kathleen had this surgery a week ago (Dr. at B & W) and is doing pretty well. I am trying not to get too excited as I am not at all sure my insurance will even cover this (Cigna), but I feel as if I have tried everything else. I moved to the Boston area from CT last summer after I lost my job of 18 years with a law firm there. I am now working for a computer company (great job and a 50% increase in salary) and living with my fiance'. Life has never been better, but I dieted off 100 pounds last year (working at the law firm and as a pharmacy technician at night and taking Fastin) and have regained 38 of those pounds. I want to live a fuller life and not feel the limitations of this out-of-control body anymore. My fiance' is originally from England, and we spent a month in France, Italy, Austria, and Switzerland in 1998 and a month in England, Wales, and Scotland last year. This fall we are taking a cross-country trip and then going on a 2 week cruise to Hawaii from San Diego with my parents who are celebrating their 50th anniversary. We plan to be married in Hawaii with just my parents in attendance. With so many wonderful plans, I cannot believe I can't get my weight under control. Well, I have rambled on enough. Forgive me and I look forward to hearing all of your life stories as well. ---------------------------
