You can substitute carrot chips for the potato chips........ and SCD muffins can

be crumbled up and kinda toasted in the oven or toaster oven to make a " cereal " .

These wouldn't be on the intro diet but remember that intro only last a couple

of days. He will no doubt have a tough time getting through this intro period

(and you might, too)..... but it's short! Some kids are harder than others to

transition to a snack or other food that is not EXACTLY like their old

favorite...... so it's hard to say. Keep in mind that he will probably

experience die-off, too..... which will make him feel not-so-good. Behaviors may

get worse for a while but once you've made the leap, I encourage you to stick it

out. We are doing a modified VB program, too...... but fortunately, have found a

lot of non-food things for Katera to mand for that she really likes and she

really likes praise and tickles as reinforcement, too.... so we've been able to

transition away from food rewards. Good luck!

The program that we do (called verbal behaviors) uses sign language

(as doesn't speak at all) and 2 of his signs are chip and

cereal. So it is a little different than using the foods for

reinforcement. By using things that are highly motivating to him, it

encourages him to sign more frequently and the hope is to communicate

more. Anyway, I am concerned about him losing these signs that he

has learned so well and becoming frustrated that he can't communicate

with us. As far as reinforcers for his DT work, we use videos and

praise which seem to work pretty well with him.

Hi, Gwen,

Yes, that is who scoped Ian, for which I am glad to have had someone as nice and

experienced. I told him that I'm in the process of trying to try this other

remedy.

Although Ian doesn't sign, but can indicate certain desires, I can empathize

with your concern about not wanting to become frustrated with regard to

communication. Our VB consultant didn't contradict our not using food for

reinforcers. You can ask your VB consultant whether is ready to hear

" not now, " or " more later, " just as we'd say to a neuro-typical child, then

substitute carrot chips and crumbled SCD muffins later on, as in Patti's post,

for which he will still need to sign. Perhaps you can first teach him to sign

for water, so that you can say, " Chips later...water? [while you sign] " If he

signs for water, then at least he'll be able to get something. Definitely run

that strategy past your consultant. If he cries due to a legitimate physical

need for nutrition or liquid, I would give him something. But we did not have a

problem with Ian going from eating all day to eating 3 meals and 2 snacks. That

seemed to be a sign that SCD was working.

Hi Teri,

Thanks for getting back to me. We use Dr. Krigsman in Woodbury, NY.

He has really been great to us! Is that your dr? I wonder what he

would think about trying something herbal for 's tummy.

is also a grazer. He would eat chips and cereal all day long if we

would let him.

are you in? I am going to try an herbal, Boswellia Serrata, instead

of Colazal (we already tried Sulfasalazine) that did better in a

clinical trial than Sulfasalazine, and shouldn't have side effects

like pharmaceuticals. I've found how to obtain the raw material and

am waiting for a quote on having it put into capsules.

the home program.

SCD, was because his DAN! doctor said no more than 1 snack in between

meals, and a digestive enzyme also with snacks; snacks not just

consisting of sugar (eg chicken with the pear sauce). Not grazing on

food all day probably gave his tummy a chance to rest, I would think.

I'm thinking out loud here but I wonder if we could come up with our own SCD

" cereal " . This is what just flashed through my mind. Use the muffin recipe

(or a cookie recipe?) and add a little more nut flour to make it stiff, form

into little balls, bake (quickly of course) and then dehydrate or let dry

out in the oven till crunchy and viola! SCD Cereal.... Anyone out there

willing to try it? We could use watered down yogurt for " milk " , or just use

as a snack or reinforcer.

I think has actually stated that the carrot juice and garlic should be

fresh.... and uncooked in order to get all the benefits, anti-fungal,

anti-parasitic, etc. I'm not sure but I think this was something her DAN doctor

told her about.

Patti

<<I use about 4oz of carrot juice and 4oz of water and crush one large

clove of garlic in it. I started out boiling the carrot juice and

stopped that at one stage but have actually decided to boil. I seem

to see better results. Good luck

Thanks Marjan,

I'll have to try some recipes and let you all know what I find out. Don't

look for much in the near future...I only get creative in the kitchen when

is ready for another stage and I fear we will be in stage 2 for a

loooonnngggggg time! She is still reacting badly from all the cheating she

did over the holidaze! She found and hoarded and ate lots of candy and got

up in the middle of the night to eat cookies that were left out!!!!
