Guest guest
I don't think Dr. Shaw has anything about the SCD in his book.... I've loaned out my copy so can't check it, but I'm fairly certain about that. So, his approach to yeast control or gut healing is really from a different slant. This diet is completely different from any other yeast diet or dietary intervention for autism or gut disorders that you might have tried or read about before. It's almost a totally different premise. You have to decide which diet you want to follow......... it's really difficult to combine different philosophies/approaches. Of course, any food that an individual child can't tolerate or is severely allergic to is not included in the diet for that particular child. You certainly don't have to use vinegar...... my daughter has been on SCD for over 8 months and I have never given her vinegar..... not for any particular reason..... I wasn't conciously avoiding it, I just haven't ever used it. I keep her diet pretty simple. Patti, mom to Katera, age 7 Dr. Shaw says no Vineger I've been reading Dr. Shaw's book, " Biological Treatments for Autism and PDD " . He talks in great depth about the yeast issues associated with autism. He claims that vineger of all kinds should not be consumed because it is a femented food and as such, will cause the yeast to colonize more easily. I'm curious if any one can comment on this since vineger is legal on the SCD. I have stopped using it for the time being. Thanks. a

I feel that his statement is in the same ballpark as 'no mushrooms while attacking candida, no camembert while cleaning the gut'. Simply missing the point. I have great respect for his work, have read the book, but felt that he could not give definite answers about WHAT TO DO with all these g.i. issues, except giving Nystatin forever and cutting out table sugar. Shaw has done important research, but underestimates the power of giving the right kind of food. Lots of fermented foods fall into that category (e.g. Kimchi). Read the label on the vinegar though. Guest guest
unpasturised vinegar may be a problem for some but apple cider vinegar is a 'vermont folk medicine' remedy......... maybe as a sort of yeast probiotic in part...........but the other side is being a source of yeats spores. interestingly vermont folk medicine is also very hot on iodine which many parents here would do to pay more attention to. my page on iodine http://members.tripod.com/mueller_ranges/links/compendium/iodine.html > I've been reading Dr. Shaw's book, " Biological Treatments for Autism > and PDD " . Balsamic is OK if it is the real thing but most are imitations and have added illegals. "
Guest guest
a, a lot of the " no yeast " diets say no vinegars of any sort. We mostly use apple cider vinegar here. Apple cider vinegar has malic acid in it which is actually said to have anti-fungal properties. Check out this link http://www.iknowthecause.com/modules.php?op=modload & name=News & file=article & sid=9\ 1 If you were worried but wanted to use some vinegar, just try the apple cider vinegar.
