" He has chronic constipation and then when he does

finally go, his stools are loose. "

This sounds to me like he has an impaction in his colon. The loose

stools would be the stool that can manage to squeeze around the

impacted area.

Have you had an abdominal x-ray done?

I am not trying to scare you, but an impaction can turn into something

serious. I would at least look into it.

I think all GI's first response to the word " constipation " is MIRALAX.

I think that the underlying problem (whatever it might be) needs to be

treated rather than just giving Miralax.

Have you tried the prune juice/orange juice combo that is explained on

Elaine's site http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info?

Also, you should start at the beginning of the diet and add foods

slowly just like the kids who have D. Constipation can be made worse

by feeding lots of raw foods. When Elaine was on the list with us,

she made it quite clear that kids with constipation should follow the

same protocol.

Hi Marissa,

My son has been on SCD for over nine months now with great results.

He used to be mildly constipated most of the time ( " pebbly poops " and

then found out he was impacted) and once he started SCD, it took

about six-eight weeks for his digestive system to somewhat " regulate

itself " . Once he started SCD, his poops were super mushy/sticky and

remained like this for those first few weeks. We have not had any

problems with constipation ever since--he goes every day and they are

normal (what everyone calls " trophies " ). In my opinion, Miralax can

do more harm than good because the child can become dependent on it.

I myself used it 2-3 times with my son right before starting SCD and

then just threw it away because he would " go " but then would go back

to his constipation once he would stop taking it...

I know some of our list members report using an orange-prune juice

combo cocktail as per Elaine Gottschall's suggestion in her website.

I would think you could use mineral oil or plain glycerin

suppositories at the beginning to help relieve your child from

constipation as well. Just remember to add things very slowly and

keep a food diary to check for any intolerances/reactions. It's

pretty much trial and error. Once you child's digestive system gets

used to the new way of eating, the constipation issues will most

likely disappear. Good luck!

My son was also on MiraLax just before starting SCD. He was mildly

constipated, but got much worse after about 1 month of taking

MiraLax. After a while, the MiraLax just caused abdominal pain.

After the MiraLax caused severe constipation, I started giving him

prunes, prune juice, and spinach. Believe it or not, he loves all

that stuff. It took about 6 weeks after the SCD Intro, and lots of

prunes, but I'm pretty sure he is better now. He has the " trophies "

several times every day. Now, he doesn't even need the prunes. He

just eats them for a snack because he likes them.
