Guest guest
Peggy, I had RAI about 15 years ago. At this point they'll, hopefully, wait until your thyroid bottoms out and you go totally hypo. This stage isn't a whole lot of fun... But in my opinion, I think it's better to just get it over with and see where you stand. If they wait to see what your thyroid is doing, what percentage of it is destroyed, you will know if you have any out put at all... or none. If they start medicating you before that point. You'll feel less awful at first... but if the gland continues to die off over the next weeks the meds you are taking will soon be inadequate (not enough) and then you'll feel worse... then they might up you a bit, the gland dies off some more, the meds are short again and you need to be upped again... it becomes a nasty roller coster where you feel good for a short while that horrid, then beg for more meds, feel good for a bit the slide backwards... If the docs stay on top of it.... and keep checking you every couple of weeks.. it can work. But, if they see you this month and say lets wait, come back in six months... well, put it this way, I'd be throwing a fit.... When I had my RAI I was in thyroid storm. Without going into a ton of details I had to get the RAI that day or they said I would die. I had an awesome endo that saw me every two weeks, checking my labs to watch to see what my gland was doing. It took six months to purge all the excess hormone out of my body before I was totally hypo and she was able to determine that my thyroid was dead. She then started me on medication and for the rest of that first year she saw me once a month. For the second year she saw me every three months.... It takes time for many of the hypo symptoms to develop... brittle nails are actually also a sign of hyperthyroid.. so that may just be carry over from your hyper stage... How high were your levels before your RAI?
