I remember when my daughter dislocated her wrist and elbow and we spent an hour of doctors and nurses pulling and twisting...excrutiating for and my arm hurt with sympathy for days! OK, what is it going on here? ;-) JD did the same last year, so that's 3 in our little group with a fracture that's not supposed to be common, and is in fact pretty rare. Poor kid had an arm that was NOT immobilised for 24 hrs, he did not move from a semi-upright position for almost 36 hrs when I finally managed to bind it up enough to move him and bring him to a ped. ortho on LI who was GREAT and saw me an hour after he had heard from me for the first time. Actually, it's the bone that goes from your shoulder to your elbow. ;-) On the particular break we mentioned (where the break is a horizontal break occurring near the joint at the shoulder), putting a cast on tends to pull the break apart and treatment consists of immobilizing the arm against the body with tons of Velcro (at least in our case it did). Apparently, because this is not a weight bearing bone, or a rotating bone, it is less likely to impact on day to day stuff. Now, try jumping up and down, or putting all one's weight onthat side and I could imagine it could hurt like the dickens!! Also, kids just get on with it! You're much worse off down there than up here. 2 hours w/o power is NBD out in western MA, we ride those things out. We've lost power at least a dozen times this year, ranging from seconds to hours. It's the two days, three days, deals that I have contingency plans for. I'm almost done with the wiring for the generator transfer switch which will give us heat, cold and hot running water, and lights during an extended outage. We have no backup heat such as a woodstove in this house, so I must provide my own backup power. Right now the rain is steady, with rain squalls lasting 10-20 minutes. The wind is steady at around 10-20mph with gusts to around 50mph. All in all, for New England, this storm is a yawner. All hype, no substance. I hope everyone is faring as well as we are up here. Petya had open heart surgery when she was four. They open the rib cage and pull it apart to do the surgery. Then it is wired back together and you must be careful not to do things that will cause one arm to reach in front of the other so that the rib cage heals evenly and not crookedly. In the PICU they had these big plastice wagons that the kids could ride in instead of wheel chairs. Petya had her sugery on Friday and by Sunday was trying to pull her stuffed animals around in the wagon. My hands were full trying to keep her from doing the things she was not supposed to do.
