I too found the IDEA advocacy book by Bonnie Tucker very helpful. Two other

books about IEPs and special ed I liked were:

You, Your Child, and “Special” Education – by Barbara Cutler

Negotiating the Special Education Maze – by , Chitwood and

Hayden

If you haven't already read it, I found Ogden's " The Silent Garden " to

be one of my favorite books on children and deafness. Very informative and

helpful.

Sorry, I can't help you on the books. I don't have any of those.

It sounds as if you have a ways to go before you get to the IEP meeting.

Are you just now starting the referral process for special Ed? First of

all, remember you can always change the IEP. If there is something you want

added you simply call another meeting. Never, never sign your IEP at the

meeting. TAKE IT HOME.

The school may not be telling you what kind of " program " is set up for HI

kids because of LRE and because they need to individualize education for

your child and they don't know your child's needs yet. You said you

contacted the local school? Have you contacted the district office? Have

you asked to observe the HI program for a day or half a day? Who refused to

tell you what kind of program is set up?

I need a little more information before I can really say if you have

anything to worry about.

Ref. process: Yes to that one.

I swore to stay away from the school system here. So I received 1hr a week

from the united way for the last 2 months. What we basically did was

" learning to listen sounds " and they told me to talk talk talk to him.

(modeling). They drew up an IEP for him but looking back now it is so vague.

I feel as if I was driven into the oral only area. This is the method they

do here when you child has residual hearing. ( I found that out most

recently) NOW after reading more books than I did in school... I am

informed. I do not agree in " totality " when it comes to education for anyone

hearing or not. So I asked for some manual communication in addition to

oral. It got me almost laughed at and a few odd stares. (Most people can

control their mouths but not their expressions) That's how I landed here

looking to other educational settings.

Hi Barb! Yes, this our child we still are waiting for their answer they have

10 days and we are on the fifth. The State Dept. of special Ed say we are

correct but because we rejected the IEP they would research if it still hold

true. The dept. of Ed agrees with us to have her only original IEP to have it

dated for when she entered to have documentation of all the services she was

given. Keeping our fingers crossed. Lori

I agree with everything else you wrote Barb, but I think the above

sentence should be modified to sahy that one can always TRY to change

the IEP. If a district doesn't want to change it, the only recourse

the parents have is to disagree with it and request mediation and/or a

due process hearing, which does not necessarily guarantee that the

parents will prevail.

Why has she been in the system since March without an IEP? Is this the

child that you are trying to get a back dated IEP for? Forgive my lapse, we

You may want to look over some sample IEPs on Sherry Z's web site. These are

actual IEPs of kids. While I would caution you against using any of these

IEPs for your child, you may want to pick out things from them that you

think would be appropriate for your child:

A good book. It sits on my shelf here at home. The only thing I don't like

about it is it doesn't give specific citations when it refers to points of

law. It may say your child has a right to something, but it doesn't give you

enough info so you can find that part of the law that gives your child that

right. Other than that, it's a fantastic book.

I don't have this, but I have a couple of Warren Estabrooks' books. If I had

enough money, I'd own them all (and I'd need a couple new bookshelves for

all the other books I want too).

Some of you may not know, but I do have a bookstore. There are descriptions

for many books, especially the ones I have, or have read, as well as enough

info about them that you can print out the page, take it to any bookstore

and order the book. Or you can order it through my bookstore (which goes to

help pay the costs of the web site). I've been working on the children's

A few years ago I was having trouble with the administration of my school

deneying acess too. I called the teacher directly and asked if I could

visit and she said sure and bring your daughter. I only found out about the

class through another mother. Is there a way for you to do any networking?

Then perhaps the hesitation to tell you is so that they won't be accused of

making decisions not based on your child's needs. Try calling with a

hypothetical question about a child with hearing loss and asking if they

have certain kind of classes in the district. Then see if you can get

permission to visit one or at least find out which school it's at then you

can contact the school directly to make arrangements for a visit.

Bonnie is speaking at 3:00 on Thursday, but ask around on Friday, she might

be on site.

The Mainstream Center services are not free, so make sure you get them

written into the IEP that applies for next year (you didn't say exactly when).
