Guest guest
Thanks for the nice welcome! (Sara & & Debbie) I couldn't find a chart to check the severity of Garrett's head shape. I would guess it is medium? Before I even knew of his condition I had been countering his lean in the car seat with a towel. I just couldn't stand to see him with that tilt, didn't look comfortable. I also got a long soft knee sock and stuffed it with fabric/batting using it as a sort of neck support in his bouncer seat which kept his head facing forward and neck straight. Since learning of his plagio/tort I've held him on my lap supporting him under the arms and letting him support his head with his neck....he does pretty good at this and insists on it sometimes. Like I said, he HATES tummy time (he has a Boppy tummy time). I feel like such an ogre subjecting him to it since he screams the entire time. When burping him on my shoulder I hold him there and recline my chair for a mild tummy time which he does alot better with. He raises his head high and looks around swiveling his neck and then will squirm backwards down my chest when he's done and bored. I let him nap in this position and have started alternating which direction his head is facing to stretch his neck. The bed positioning might work if I could tape him to his positioner! Every time I check, he's back in his normal position. He's too big now to stay where you position him. I wished I would have known all of this when I brought him home or on his 2 week doc appt! I'm going to call the pediatricians office today and discuss with him what the plan of action is. We were referred to him by our neighbor friends who have a 5 year old. This child just happened to have plagio/tort and was helmeted, referred by the pediatrician but not until after his 4 month check. Doc has not discussed repositioning...I guess he wants to see if he will round out then address it after his 4 month? From what Ive read on here, the sooner the quicker the helmet comes off. He's a very pro-active doctor and aggressive with treatment (with Garrett's weight loss he was) so I feel he has good judgement, I just want to hear his reasoning since I am now a bit more educated on the subject. I think I need a referral from doc for appt with Cranial Tech. Gotta love the internet! Glad I found this wonderful group to use as a resource! I will keep you updated. Thanks, & Garrett Re: Newby in Houston, TX - 2 1/2 mo old with torticollus & plagio Hi & welcome!I'll simply second 's reply. I see you are located in Houston. Cranial Tech has a licensed center in Houston (the woodlands actually). I'd give them a call if you'd like an evaluation. I'm not sure if this particular clinic offers free evals or not. Most of their clinics do, but this clinic is licensed, so they might have a fee. Guest guest
Thanks ! His reflux is much better...I've taken him off of his medication recently. It does annoy me how my doctors nurse was totally aghast that I hadn't been doing tummy time. I guess I should have known this? Getting weight on Garrett and keeping his food down was paramount to me at the time. Thanks to the internet and great groups like this, I can fill in the blanks of what your doctor/nurse doesn't tell you (or forgets). All of the handy "Caring for your baby" books need to be updated also because not only do they not mention plagio or tort but they don't stress the importance of tummy time...atleast not the 3 books I bought right before Garretts birth! Jeeze! Tummy time is getting a little easier and I will keep doing it. Thanks for everyones support! & Garrett ...we'll have to stay in touch since we will be using the same DOC facility/equipment. Please let me know how the fitting goes! Re: Newby in Houston, TX - 2 1/2 mo old with torticollus & plagio hi jamiemy name is tiffany and i am also from houston. my son who is now 7mo. today also had the problem with the reflux. he absoulutley would not lay on his stomach without screaming his head off. so we didn't get much tummy time either. i'm taking him in on monday to be casted for a DOC band for his plagio. i know that it is hard to listen to your babay cry. i know my son would continually trow up as weel if i layed him on his stomach. but you need to get in as much tummy time as possible. even if it is only a few minutes at a time, every little bit helps. listen if you have any questions i would be more than happy to help as best i can. just e-mail me at tiffanyslaton11@.... i promise to get bak to you as soon as i can. Guest guest
Well I was told to have Garrett sleep on his back and to never let him sleep on his tummy. I know he was more comfortable with a little pressuire on his tummy (burping over the shoulder or knee). Doc never said to let sleep on stomach otherwise I might have avoided his plagio in the first place. Do your tummy sleepers have plagio or tort? His reflux isn't a problem as much... I keep him upright after feedings and burp him thoroughly and only occasionally have reflux episodes.
