Guest guest Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 I'm finally caught up in the e-mails... I just can't allow myself to get this far behind again...heheheh :-) I know this is old, but I just had to reply... Yes.. chalk it up to Tylenol #3 & Flexoril Loopiness if my normal level of insanity is too difficult to deal with... but.... Maybe you should ask your husband (in front of you MIL of course) that you're seriously considering starting up a new Reality TV show called " Mother-In-Law Swap " and see how she reacts... bwahahahaha... Sorrry, I just couldn't resist. As for your remark about her possibly making a dig or if you're paranoid... I don't know if she meant it as a dig because at the moment I hear a lot of chatter about this show at the gym too. I've never seen it, nor do I plan on watching it. I'm trying to limit TV watching to just the shows that really interest me and cut out the stuff that I really wouldn't cry about missing... oh wait.. that's almost everything except for Star Trek..hehehe.. yup.. major Sci-Fi obsessed in this household. But I digress... I had major issues with my mother-in-law for the first 3 years of our marriage. I'm just so grateful that hubby decided to move to Canada to be with me instead of my moving down to Salt Lake City, Utah. That put a good 3,000 miles between us... muwahahahahha... yes that was a wicked evil laugh on my part. But after tons of e-mail back and forth between myself and my mother-in-law... we are very close now. It was a difficult battle, but I stood my ground and she learned that I can be just as stubborn and strong-willed as she is... only I'm not as controlling of a personality as she is. I think she learned her lesson when and I planned our wedding at city hall here in Canada. We made the wedding day November 17th, which was the anniversary of our meeting on the internet. The date fell on a Wednesday which was fine by us. MIL didn't like that and told us that if we keep that date, no one from Utah would fly up for the wedding. We kept the date and no one showed up from 's side of the family. That was fine by me. It hurt a lot that none of his (very huge family) bothered to come up for the wedding. My MIL then realized that we were going to live our lives the way we decide to between the 2 of us and family on either side had no control over our choices. Now, I'm closer to my MIL than I am my own mother most of the time. Oh Oh... here I go on mothers again... LOL... But it's ok... now that I know, understand, and accept the way my mother is... he can't get under my skin so easily and we're starting to get along much better. In fact, I plan on calling her today. Wish me luck :-) Parents just have to learn that when their children grow up and move in or marry their special someone... they have to cut the apron strings and accept that their little baby is now and adult and deserves the same respect they expect from their own parents where their marriage is concerned. How quickly some moms forget... especially with their sons. Wow... that was such a shocker for me as I've been an only child growing up with just my mom and grandma with no male siblings or parental figures in my life. Ok.. novel is now over... sorry.. I always seem to get carried away in my thoughts. I hope you can resolve your relationship with hubby's mom and find some kind of level playing field and understanding. mucho hugs, Norah P.S.... I openly say to my in-laws when we arrive for Christmas every year... " WooooHoooo... we made it for Christmas at the Out-Laws... I've missed you guys so much " . I think my hubby is definitely harder on me after he has been talking to his Mom. She has always thought that I was not good enough for her son. He doesn't catch the little things she says, either that or he won't pay attention. A few weeks ago, she asked him if he has ever watched " Wife Swap " . He didn't take that as a slam to me, but I did. Am I just paranoid??? Quote
