Peoria ambulance company fined for illegal billing

Dec. 12, 2000 | 5:43 p.m.

PEORIA, Ill. (AP) -- A company that provides ambulance and

wheelchair transport services in Peoria and surrounding areas has agreed to pay

$2.1 million to Illinois and the federal government to settle a lawsuit filed

over fraudulent billing practices.

Under the agreement announced Tuesday, American Medical Transport

``acknowledges that it appears to have submitted a substantial number of

improper claims to the Medicare and Medicaid programs in violation of the civil

False Claims Act'' from Sept. 1, 1991, through July 31, 1997.

U.S. Attorney Frances Hulin said in a prepared statement that AMT

improperly billed the programs by taking wheelchair patients from their

residences to medical appointments, then claiming the patients had to be moved

on a stretcher and required an ambulance. Transportation by ambulance can be

reimbursed under the plans; transport by wheelchair van is not.

Officials said AMT has entered into a 3-year corporate integrity

agreement with the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services.

Hulin said no criminal prosecutions are expected.
