This is my busiest time of the year. I'm monitoring though.

I've been running so fast lately that last night I forgot my insulin and was

157 this morning - yuk!! Hopefully that's a lesson I won't repeat.

I'm still around, but have been more active on the cpapusers list instead of

this one. I got diagnosed with slep apnea (probally have had it a few

years...it often goes undiagnosed). Hopefully the HMO will have the CPAP

approved, so I can get it Monday.

The pressure will be set at 10 cm of water positive pressure.

I've also been doing the sleep apneia chats and general chats at

www.talkaboutsleep.com

I feel more like I belong on the cpausers list and the chats...we help each

other...I just recently got diagnosed and have learned a lot. Much like this

list used to be prior to all the post about low carbs.

BTW, the free month of Glucophage XR coupon at www.glucophagexr.com still says

it expires 6-30-2001, but I received one in the mail (snail mail) that expires

on July 31, 2001.

OK, this isn't exactly topic, well maybe on the other hand, it is. I wanted

to comment on those that feel like non-lowcarbing outcasts on the list.

This list is NOT a low carb list, and I'd love to hear more from you all

that do the ADA plan with or without meds. I remember a couple of you

saying you follow the exchange plan, but with not quite as many carb

exchanges as the plan calls for. Care to elaborate?

I really want everyone to feel welcome, and I apologize if I sometimes get

zealous about lowering my carbs. It has helped me tremendously, but I don't

consider myself a lowcarber - I simply lowered them from what I used to eat.

I eat a balanced meal...I don't pig out on carbs, but I don't restrict them

either. Currently I take 2000 Glucophage XR with dinner and 15 mg Actos. My

last A1C was 6.1.

In addition to diabetes, I also have gout and cholestrol problems. I don't want

to eat " just protein " since with gout I'm suppose to limit protein and don't

want to eat " just fat " since that will make the cholestrol worse. I've talked

to my doctor about fish oil, and he said it works for some. I told him I would

try it for 3 months and see if it helps me. He said that sounds like a plan.

My computer has been out of commission since Tuesday and I just got it back

from the shop late Friday. Been catching up on past emails between bouts of

frustration trying to get the monitor up to a higher resolution.

I'm a low-carber only because I went undiagnosed for so long that my

pancreas is pooped. I certainly don't think that it's right for everyone!!

But it works great for me. I've lost enough weight now that I've eliminated

3/4 of my dose of Glipizide! (Only taking 2.5 mg in AM for the dawn thingy.)

My hbA1c at the last test was 5.3. Tris down to 89, hdl at 49 (want it

higher!) and still trying to get the LDL lower (158). Because my insulin

resistance has also gone down due to the weight loss, I find I can eat a few

more carbs now and still keep my numbers low and keep losing weight. Wish

that I could eat more carbs!! I envy those of you who can. I'd kill for a

sandwich.....

Believe it or not eating all meat will take your cholesterol down. It's the

carbs that cause cholesterol to go up. Raw meat is even better for you. I

ate almost all meat for 8 months and did not develop gout. Gout is the

result of a continuously high acid level. IMHO a balanced meal contains no

processed grains. Processing is the scourge of the earth.

Hi Bill and everyone.

I'm sure sorry about the sleep apnea but looks like I may be in the same

boat with you. I have to go to the sleep clinic next Sunday evening and

will be released about 8:30 the next morning. I'm having lots of problems

lately along with the lack of sleep. My heart is acting up again, blood

sugar is running close to 300, can't get it down now matter what I eat or

don't eat. I don't even feel like eating at all. We've had 2 more deaths

in our family. They're burying my last uncle tomorrow and I'm not even able

to go to the funeral. I guess all of you have seen on the news where

Houston and all of the outlying areas are totally flooded. Thank goodness I

live on the side of a hill about 60 miles north of Houston and I don't think

I will ever have a water problem here. I just can't stop thinking about

when I was a child and lived there. It was nothing unusual for everything

to be flooded several times each year. Of course, that was before they had

all of the drainage systems that they have in place now. Seeing all of this

has left me very depressed. I watch the news and can't quit crying.

Depression seems to be my biggest problem right now. Just can't seem to

snap out of it. I decided that the smartest thing I could do is sit down

and write some poetry but then the poetry seems to be turning into music so

now I'm up and off to the piano to see what I can come up with.

I sure didn't mean for this post to be so sad but guess I'll send it anyway.

I miss all of you. Just been too stressed to sit down and type anything.

It's great to hear from you. You may find that the sleep study makes a huge

difference in your overall health. My husband has had 4 studies over the

last several years and each time, his equipment was tweaked. He just had

oxygen added and we've both noticed improvement in his energy and less

depression. (He uses a bipap instead of a cpap.)

It's real good to hear from you Tootie! I've been wondering where you've

been, and how the weather down in soggy Texas is affecting you. Glad you

live on the side of a hill. I live on the side of a hill also at 1350ft

Play some happy songs, and we'll all cyber-listen. I know you've been

hit with a lot of heartache, but try to look at the happy things in your

Good to hear from you.

Tootie,

The Austin Red Cross is driving to Houston. It's on the news here too.

Hopefully you have better luck getting your CPAP than I did (it took them A

MONTH to get the results to me, and now I'm waiting on the HMO to approve the

CPAP (should know something in a day or two)).

You're welcome to join www.talkaboutsleep.com too. The chat schedule is posted

Drugs an advances in medicine have helped increase the average age of

humans. Processing removes the goodness from foods. For example the

polishing of rice, refined breads even the peeling of the apple.

Without some form of processing, we would all have to raise our own food and

not have much time for anything else. We also would not be able to cook it

or make it appetizeable in other ways as well. Why is processing such a

scourge. Most of the advances in food preservation that have made it

possible to separate the time of food production from the time of eating

involve processing. If processing is so harmful, why has the average age of

humans, at least in " advanced " societies been steadily increasing over at

least the last 20,000 years? Why has the general level of health and

well-being increased so much over time?

Just curious

> Hamish: My point was that not all processing is bad. Think how difficult

it would be to live a long life in the abscence of the discovery of curing

meat for preservation, cooking, canning and freezing and drying as means of

preservation, refrigeration to retard the spoilage of fresh meat and

produce, various types of chemicals and processes to remove or kill natural

toxins occuring in fresh food. Also many foods are somehat unpalatble or

unappetizing socially unacceptable without some type of processing.

Polished rice is an excellent example. I don't think anyone would disagree

that polishing removes a substantial amount of the nutrient value. On the

other hand, I understand that large numbers of people in several rice

consuming areas in the world, (the US being one) simply refuse to consider

the unpolished version.

The interesting fact is that the further removed we become from eating for

mere survival, the more important social values become in determining what's

good to eat. A starving tribesman in the Sudan may regard raw locusts as a

culinary treat. However, in the Ononadaga Indian Nation here in Central New

York, the only time locusts are considered is every 17 years when the 17

year locusts emerge. Even then the locusts are fried in oil to crisp them

before eating. The frying is processing. Also the remainder of the people

in this area tend not to consider 17 year locusts as an acceptable food

under any circumstances.

In any event, I will continue to lose little sleep over the processing my

food undergoes so long as I have some idea of its actual nutritional

content.

How many carbs were you eating? What kind of carbs were they? On Atkins diet

he keep you in ketosis. I lost weight and was able to get off my blood

pressure medication eating almost all meat. I do not consider it a healthy

long term diet, but it tells me meat is not the cholesterol problem nor the

gout problem. Meat with grains and cooked foods the SAD (standard American

diet) tends to cause the acid to rise. If you eat raw fruits with this diet

you should not have gout. Fruits make the body less acid. For diabetics who

can't tolerate fruit sugars, meat and raw low carb veggies should not cause

gout. Again it's the processed foods that are the problem. See a trend here.
