511 travel service starts

As of Friday, motorists traveling along Interstate 81 have access to a

voice-activated travel information service, according to the Virginia

Department of Transportation.

Motorists simply dial 511 and let their mouth do the rest.

" The 511 service links technology with transportation and provides a safety

net for those who travel the I-81 corridor, " said Virginia's Secretary of

Transportation Whitt Clement.

The service links motorists to travel services such as lodging, attractions,

hospitals, pharmacies and towing services.

Virginia is one of seven states to pilot the service.
