... IM not being obstinate but unlike diabetes; the cause of aides....

and the abstinence of what ever caused the aids ...i.e. blood transfusions,

needle sharing, whatever ... in no way contributes to any cure; as does

losing weight and cutting out the foods that triggered diabetes in the first

place...If you are a health professional, public health officer or something

similar i would think that you would feel the need to focus here in this

group on behavior changes that can truly have an impact on this disease ...

to accept the move to oral meds or the move to insulin .... is just not a

prudent ideology... ask any endo doc and they will tell you that the

progression to these meds is usually due to patient non compliance with

weight loss and exercise.... IM sorry but the cure and yes I say cure for

type 2 lies in weight loss... As Dr. Bernstein states in his

book.....IM not in any health care field..... but being married to a

physician for some 30 years now..... I have had plenty of access to them.....

My husband, associated with the largest health care institute in the world,

has maybe given me a different perspective.....IM not obsessed with weight

but when the loss of weight will prevent further complications to a disease

how can we as a diabetic group not focus to some extent on the best ways to

lose that weight.....

, it is my husband also, that believes type 2 diabetes can be eradicated

with normal weight. He says with healthy eating and a reasonable caloric

intake, excersise and a diet devoid of mainly junk and processed foods we

would not see the alarming rate of type 2 diabetes in young people. Further

that if a type 2 does not have a burned out pancreas and can maintain a goal

weight then they are essentially cured of their diabetes as long as they keep

at their goal. Its his belief that insulin is the protocol only when the

patient will not comply with the need to reduce their weight......he further

states that mortality is greatly increased in insulin taking type 2 diabetics

verses those that are able to come to a normal weight. What is the purpose of

this list? Are we here to offer encouragement to go on and pump insulin or be

supportive of healthy alternatives? Should we be sharing complementary

medical advice that has worked for us maybe.....like niacin or

l-carotine...... do I maybe have a home remedy that could work for your

tingly feet?... Advil works for mine.... Taking my glucopage first thing in

the morning helps my Bs stay stable through the day 2x 500 in the morning

upon rising...... 1 at night before sleep..... should we offer our experience

with a diabetic educator that insists on a diet of 40% carbohydrates and 1800

calories......you all tell me...... Do high sugar levels cause depression?

What is it that this list wishes to accomplish..... to support?..... to

provide information?..... to encourage alternative lifestyles that just might

make a difference for someone?

we'll be more than happy to enlighten him, ;-)

Also yalegirl, why are you on the weight issue when it is often a topic we

understand to be important? Do you know who or what you are fighting??

Soon you will find your posts unanswered as members will most likely start

deleting your messages.

You say your husband has made you see different in regards to diabetes, you

don't need to let him make you feel guilty for a disease that isn't your

fault. You need to accept your diabetes and get on with your control ,

although anger and denial common with dm, you need to get with the program

now, may I suggest a therapist to help you deal with the realities in your

dm, I would suggest a therapist who deals with grief and loss therapy, as

this is what we feel and experience in living with a chronic disease.

I think we have a semantic problem here again. If by " keep at their goal " he

mean continue to keep BG at normal range BY WHATEVER MEANS NECESSARY -- i.e.

pills, diet, exercise or, yes, insulin -- one is " cured " of diabetes.

However, to newbies this is very misleading. They may think " cured " means

one can go back to " old " way of life, i.e. eating whatever they want. This

is dangerous.

His -- and your -- belief that insulin is only to be used as a last resort is

just plain wrong. There are many type 2s on this list and out there in the

world who use insulin for control by choice, not because they have failed to

comply. This is just adding guilt where guilt is not necessary. Vicki

I think you've added much more than you should. In fact, why don't you

take a hiatus? I see two things wrong with your posting: you are

dwelling on your own fat problem and trying to make everyone else feel

bad, and the reason for that is probably because your husband reminds

you of it all the time for being a bad girl. Some physician.

Yalegirls... i'm sooo sorry that you have to put up with such an insensitive,

Hmmm actually it does...

if they no longer do needle sharing, or sexual transmission, then they are

Your ignorance in listing blood transfusions as a causual factor with AIDS is

Must you continue to be so insensitive when you've been repeatedly told that

there are some people who are very sensitive about weight issues? There are

some on this list who have battled weight problems and societal issues related

to them since childhood. For some of them, that very word is a sore point. The

fact that you'll use it in reference to yourself doesn't make it hurt them any

less. Surely you're familiar with that horrid old schoolyard chant that ends in

" can't get through the kitchen door. "

As the wife of a physician, you should also know that there are those people who

can control their diet and exercise 'til the cows come home, and still not be

able to lose the weight.

Please, THINK before you hit that send button. How many people will you hurt

with your next post?

Please Yalegirl, you are still missing the point. I am overweight yes, but

calling myself a " fatso " is demeaning and doesn't help one bit. Even when you

refer to yourself as a fatso I find it offensive, although I will admit that is

my problem. Also you have *some* valid points but then you make generalities.

If your husband is a physician then you should know, weight loss or not ... at

the current time there is NO CURE for diabetes. What there is, is control.

Weight loss will help some of us yes, but not every type 2 needs to lose weight

for good control. Weight loss is a tool. Yes, I want to lose weight but that is

not the only thing that is going to help me keep my sugar under control. I

liked the person on here who said that her doctor told her she was a diabetic

who was controlling her disease.

Maybe there are some people who need to be hit on the head with a 2x4 to help

them deal with the weight/diabetes issue, but to assume that we all need that is

an error on your part.

Please stop preaching to us on this issue. I have been lectured about it enough.

I am glad to hear what works for you, but please keep it in the first person

and stop telling the rest of us what we need to do.

To put it more simply... please get off our case!

Yalegirls,

This list DOES realize that for obese individuals weight loss will help them

gain better control. Where are you getting the idea that weight loss is not

a focal point here? I've been on the list for 3 months now and have picked

up on the fact that most people here are do realize the importance of it and

do advocate it for heavier people to gain better control. Are you reading

Yalegirls-Your focus/message has been " fat causing diabetes " .

I have certainly gotten the message from this group that exercise is

important in the goal of lowering my Bg's. I have lost 5 lbs since low

carbing and walking. My bg's really don't seem too much better yet but

perhaps I need more time or more glucophage?

Personally, I am taking offense at yours posts and I'm not even fat. I did

not get diabetes from being FAT. I went through much trauma which the older

members here already know about so I have no intention of repeating my

story. I have to say now that because of a Medical doctor miss-diagnosing

my illness is why I doggoned near died with congestive heart failure 4 years

ago and then 2 cardiac arrests 2 weeks later. Just because your husband is

a doctor does not mean that he is GOD and knows everything. Furthermore,

the fact that you are married to a doctor does not make you any more

intelligent or knowledgeable than the rest of us. There are many, many

people practicing medicine today who are killing people with their mistakes.

I don't normally get involved in nasty disputes on here but you are " pushing

my button " now and I would like for you to think about how you are coming

across to all of us. We all have a big battle with this " curse " , diabetes,

and we do not need your self-loathing attitude lashing out at us. You are

acting like all of the big bullies out on the playground in elementary

school who try and force their opinions on everyone else. I have enough

stress in my life already and this congestive heart failure is literally

killing me. I am too sick to even cook a meal for myself at this point.

Since I am unable to drive If this continues I will have to stop reading my

email because I can't handle anymore stress. Please STOP.

P.S. My next door neighbor is 68 years old and has had diabetes for 21 years

and is not and never has been overweight in his life.

Yalegirl,

I've only been on this list for a few days, but the number and tone of your

posts saying the same thing over and over and over and over again... it's

really kind of appalling. I've learned a lot from the other people on this

list about diet changes, without them going on a tirade about what causes

what. None of them have told me I am a " fatso like them " . If you are the

wife of a leading physician, how come you ended up with diabetes, if it is

preventable by not getting " fat " as you say? I realize that that statement

isn't a very nice one to say... but it fits in with your theory, and it

isn't any more objectionable than your statements to the rest of us have

been. Do you have any reason for being on this list other than preaching

about how we all caused our own illness? If so, please tell us about it.

If not, we don't want to hear it anymore, we aren't totally without minds so

we need to have the same thing told to us 8 times a day. Even the moderator

has asked you to stop. I've been keeping my fingers silent since I'm new

here, but this morning I'm just fed up. (Now I'm off MY soapbox.)

I have really ( I mean really tried ) to keep my nose out of this debate, but

I've had it. 1 st of all yalegirls losing weight does not cure diabetes. All

it does is aid in controlling your diabetes. You can lose all the weight you

wnat and still not be able to eat what you want. Why? Because you still have

a chronic disease that will cause your blood sugars to rise. Hence you will

still be on a diet. So are you cured? NO! If that was the case then would we

really need to have this message board? NO! Because we wouldn't have

diabetes. Second of all being overweight does not cause diabetes. Your

pancreas shutting down causes diabetes. I know when your overweight you put

to much strain on your pancreas and all that but what about tens of hundreds

of american that are overweight and diabetes free? Explain that to me. Third

of all quit using the word fat. I am not nor will i ever be fat. I am

pleasantly plump. I am a part of this group and feel everyone is my friend

and companion in this fight, so when you say the word fat it hurts my

feelings. I did not cause myself to become diabetic because of my weight nor

did anyone else. It just happens. One day you get struck with a unlucky

stick. I had gestational diabetes and not one person told me to lose weight

because I was to fat and that's why I had g.d. Bobbie

Yalegirls, as a teacher, I know that some students are very slow learners and

I am sorry that you are having a problem learning what the group here is

trying to tell you. I will try to explain it again to you. I will try to use

very simple sentences so that you will understand.

1. I am an overweight diabetic.

2. I know that weight loss helps me get better control over my disease.

3. I respect everyone's right to share.

4. I don't like to be preached to.

5. I (and others) have asked you not to preach to us on this topic.

6. I (and others) am offended by your tone.

7. I keep reading posts from you that continue to preach and offend.

8. I (and others) are NOT being helped by your " helpful " comments.

9. I respect your right to share YOUR experience without offending.

message below. I wrote it in a moment of " reaction " rather than " response " . I

apologize to the group for not doing what someone else has suggested ...

I have written a private apology to Yalegirls and with this post now I plan to

I don't like to be mean or sarcastic and unfortunately when I get irritated I

tend to strike back instead of thinking rationally.

With this apology to all, I am officially dropping the subject.
