Guest guest
My doctor didn't refer me to a class right away. I was pretty despondent over the diagnosis, and she figured (accurately, as it turned out) I wouldn't get much out of it at that point in time. But it's not too late! My parents never met with a dietician or monitored their bgs at home until *I* was diagnosed--and my mother had been a type 2 for about 20 years, 10 of them on insulin, at that point! (This is one of many reasons why I detest my parents' doc, BTW...) Find a class, Ken. And check out your local bookstore or library. There's a ton of info out there. I keep my copy of _Diabetes A to Z_ on my nightstand, with my Bible. Guest guest
Willie, I have a lot to learn. I'm getting a lot from diabetes veterans and the ADA. I'll look for a class and call my insurance company about what they will cover. Sure is hard to get sick these days. It ocurred to me today that I'm permanently sick. Bummer. Guest guest
You dont have to consider youserlf sick, you just have a disease that you will have the rest of your life til they discover a cure for, in the meantime you will have to manage it yourself by eating healthy and it is easy to do you just have to get in a routing to do it every day. I have been doing it for 20 years some days you do go off of it but then you get on track I cant tell you the days I had been in the Hosp sick and didn't eat but myBS was in the 200 range anyway and had to have insulin. I am on Dialysis but consider myself sick, you have to change your way of thinking , just eat healthy. Phyllis Re: Howdy! I'm new in these parts Willie, I have a lot to learn. Guest guest
No, tatar, I don't think you sound like a wise guy. Unfortunately, my mom never received a lot of info from any of her doctors, except " take your medicine, " then " take your insulin. " And you're right, that the level of knowledge has changed drastically since Mom was diagnosed. Her current doctor, however, is " younger " than the one who diagnosed her, and is allegedly more " up-to-date " on things. Still, he never bothered to talk to her about diet, exercise, etc., until she and my dad *asked* him. (This same doctor never talked to Mom about mammograms, either, until she was 65 and I basically " bullied " her into asking him for one. I threatened to show up at his office and " quack " at him if she didn't get one. I wouldn't have actually done it, but Mom wasn't willing to risk it. <g>) Sadly, I think I learned more about diabetes in the first week of being diagnosed than my mom did in all those years, just from grabbing anything I could find to read and asking questions. Fortunately, Mom and Pop followed my lead. You *can* teach an old dog new tricks! Anyway, your advice is well-taken. Getting the information we need--and putting it to use!--is critical. Guest guest
---Years ago there was not that much information available and the Dr didn't stress anything either. My mom was diabetic but one would have never known it cause she ate whatever she wanted. Of course that was not the route to take and we lost her at age 69 to a host of complications. My motto now is Knowledge is POwer. Something I had read on here sometime back and it has stayed with me. I am trying to learn all I can. It is something I told a wife of a newly diagnosed diabetic here and she is using it also. Learning all you can and applying what has been learned to your daily life is important. The stakes are too high not to. Madge In diabetes@y..., " Willie Walter " <wgwalter@h...> wrote: > > No, tatar, I don't think you sound like a wise guy.
