Eventually he's going to have to do it himself anyway. Just hope he isn't math impaired like I am! :-) (But then most guys aren't, for some reason...) I do believe some time back we did a little informal survey and there were a lot of people whose diabetes was triggered by some flu-like illness. I know mine was. (However, I already was hypothyroid and had Sjogren's, which is an autoimmune disorder). Vicki

Thanks for the explanation. Must be scarey as hell when you at first don't know what is going on. This way, he can start feeling like he has some control over his DM without ALL the burden and responsibility, because you are still there for backup. Guest guest
n, that's a great idea - the cards and getting him involved in his dosing. And I, too, hope there is a cure before he's out on his own. Barb -------- http://www.RainbowFarm.com http://www.RainbowFarm.com/photos.html > I made about 100 index cards today. Each has one food item, serving size, amount of CHO, amount of PRO, glycemic index for the CHO and conversion for the PRO (.6 for most protein, .48 for milk protein). > > Gabe picked out his lunch and dinner and calculated the total grams glucose from carb, protein and total of all. He then used the dosing coefficient Ron set up for each meal (lunch is 9.7 and dinner 7.1)to calculate a dose. Finally he converted the dinner number from H insulin to R insulin by multiplying the dose times 45 and dividing by 40 (because R is a little less effective than H). He uses R at dinner because it is slower and his digestion, as you know, is slow at dinner. > > I hope there will be a cure before he really has to do it on his own. Meanwhile it is a big help for me if he has the meal planned and calculated before I reach the kitchen. > > n

We were youngsters before all the vaccines were available, and couldn't have afforded them if they were available. When one of us caught something, like measles, mumps, or whooping cough, all the others came down with it, one by one. I read that type 1's tend to be large babies and be big for their age up until school age. That tells me that - in additon to exposure to a virus - type 1's are different genetically from birth. Studies also show that exposure to cows' milk from birth predisposes people to type 1. How does Gabe fit in? How about your other children? Guest guest
I agree with Vicky! There are times when I have no idea what the original post is about. Also, changing the subject line helps also. whimsy2@... wrote: > In a message dated 01-02-11 22:02:28 EST, you write: > > << No guidelines. Any suggestions?
