I have MS and

extreme progression in core trunk stability and often can’t sit in a

chair environment. Looking for options to use my laptop but get better

abdominal support etc.

I have been looking at a number of options, some insanely

expensive and others more reasonable but involve purchase of use of existing

recliner.

Here are some of the links of products I’ve found and

would like input on what others have done or which of these seem

reasonable….

SUPINE WORKSTATIONS

Supine workstations allow individuals the flexibility to

work in reclined positions. Various reclined postures may be effective

accommodations for neck, back, hip, and circulatory limitations. Manufacturers

of supine workstations either have the chair integrated with other products

such as keyboard trays and monitor risers or have workstations that stand

alone. By not having the seat integrated, an individual can combine a supine

workstation with a hospital bed or a recliner, even a

“zero-gravity” chair (Based on NASA studies, these appear to place

the least amount of stress on the spine.)

The following manufacturers and vendors can provide

information on prices, availability of products, and usefulness of products. If

you would like to return to Step 1 and select another impairment, go to:

OPTION 3

A Computer Workstation Designed to

Relieve Back, Neck and CTD Pain

http://easychairworkstation.com/

http://bb.1asphost.com/supine/default.asp $100

The Supine Workstation is built around a commercially available

BackSaver recliner. Changing the position of the recliner and attached

Workstation requires no motorized parts and is virtually effortless. The user

simply shifts his body weight to change the position of the recliner chair, and

the counterbalanced support arm of the Workstation facilitates its movement in

concert with the recliner. A 21 " NEC flatscreen monitor conserves space

and reduces weight while providing a large video interface, a necessity for

people with reduced vision. The monitor angle is adjustable; and the keyboard

mount is adjustable in three directions. There are photographs and more

examples at: http://www.arch.gatech.edu/crt/supine/supine.htm or contact the

What type of workstation can accommodate a user who cannot

sit upright?

For individuals with orthopedic back conditions, there are a

few companies that make workstations that recline to varying degrees, offering

an option to computing from an office chair.

A self-contained workstation and chair with headrest,

attached as one unit that moves simultaneously to a semi reclining position of

20 degrees or forward tilt of 10 degrees. (Aptus)

A mobile, tilting, computer support frame that straddles the

users own bed or recliner. (ErgoPod)

A portable work surface that resembles a tilted TV tray that

is designed to hold a book or laptop computer while the user is reclining on a

couch or bed. (Laptop Laid- Back, KayJae)

A hospital over-the-bed table with a tilting feature to

allow a lap top computer user to work from a somewhat reclined position. Some

models may not have a " lip " along the edge to hold the laptop in

place while tilted, so try securing the bottom with Velcro. (BackSaver,

Sammons)

A steel frame, which supports an adjustable CRT, arm and

attached pull-out keyboard tray, that is positioned over the users recliner or

easy chair. (EasyChair Workstation)
