We allow a maximum tuition reimbursement of $1250 (full time) or $750

(part-time) per year which may be used toward college tuition or toward CE >

$100/course; travel, etc is therapist responsibility as well as licensure

renewal fees and professional organization membership dues.

The therapy industry is again facing a situation where jobs exceed available

personnel. With this in mind, companies are using different strategies to

recruit new employees. At the same time, there continues to be a challenge

to cut costs as well as maintain stated budgets. The hospital I work at is

contemplating taking away the continuing education money as well as the

license reimbursement funds for the therapy OT, PT, and ST staff. I was

wondering if any else has experienced this; and the resultant outcome with

the staff with regard to clinical educational growth as well as staff

satisfaction. I would also like to take an informal survey on what others

are offering for continuing education funds for their staff.

Shari,

Our administration removed cont ed money about two years ago with devastating

effects. Therapists left, recruiting to this rural location became impossible,

moral plummeted and this was timed to coincide with the new legal requirement

for continuing education hours. We have since gotten some of the money back for

'mutually beneficial' continuing education classes. I feel your pain. Now each

request is evaluated on a case by case basis and it has to benefit the

organization as well as the associate. (not an unreasonable request). Previous

cap on cont ed was at $1500/year. Good luck. We never had license

reimbursement, always considered it the associates obligation as a requirement

for the job. Do all your nurses get license reimbursement?

Our CME is a sliding scale

$800 first two years

$1,000 year three

Additional $100 per year to $1500

A benefit of 5 CME days per year is provided in addition to normal

vacation/PTO accruals.

PT Licenses are paid by employer. This is a business expense - no PT can

be hired to become a profitable vehicle for the company without a

license.

We pay up to $450 for APTA dues, again recognizing this as a cost of

business.

One way that we are able to offer continuing education courses (8-10 per

year) to our therapists is to co-sponsor courses with some of the national

companies. This way, in exchange for doing some leg work on our

end-providing registration, arranging for audiovisual equipment, breaks,

etc. we in turn receive anywhere from 2-5 free slots for the courses. We

also offer an additional $500.00 per FTE for continuing education. We do

not provide license reimbursement for staff as this is a professional

responsonsibility.
