While doing site reviews of PT clinics, I have noticed various

processes for storage and delivery of ionto medication. They vary

from the clinic keeping their own supply of meds and using one

syringe to inject into electrodes to requiring the patient to obtain

the meds on their own and using a new disposable syringe for each

treatment. Does anyone know of a written policy or accreditation

standard for the delivery of this modality? I have searched the PT

Manager list-serve archives, but most ionto discussions surround

reimbursement issues. Thanks.

Aetna hasn't paid for ionto for several years here in Virginia. It is also

not reimbursed by Medicare or Anthem BCBS. Medicare will vary by state.

I could be totally off base here and , Ken or Jim may have a better answer

(not my specialty) but what I found was that it was is was disallowed when

combined with other procedures but paid for when not. Our view was to maximize

reimbursement where fair so that we could comp needed procedures for the

patient. As much as business efficiency matters, I feel you need to build those

points to make sure the patient benefits. Thanks!! Doug
