Guest guest
Ok guys, I have to jump into this conversation. There is no magical " year mark " or timeframe for problems with labs, or for rebound weight to become an issue. The problem stems right from the beginning when WE make the conscious decision not to take the vitamins and calcium the way we were instructed to do from the very start. I (and nearly every other patient out there) have pushed the envelope to see just how much junk food I could get away with eating, how much sugar would be too much to cross that " uh-oh " line, and I alone made the decision to not take my vitamins and my calcium as instructed because I felt invincible to any problems after the weight had come off. I felt that nothing could touch me or stop me. I felt that because I was able to do dairy products without excessive diarrhea that surely I was absorbing the calcium I needed to stay healthy. I also felt that the weight would not return because it had not been an issue since surgery, therefore there was no need for me to have any sort or exercise regime. I WAS WRONG ON ALL ACCOUNTS. Dr K has said from the very beginning that this surgery is only a tool and that it is not a magic bullet. He has said repeatedly at meetings that there are ways to regain weight with the DS, that after a certain amount of time our bodies adjust to the common channel and allow for more absorption, and that the supplements are to be taken daily for the rest of your life, yet we still don't hear it. We would rather choose to believe that somehow it will be different for us. The issue I had, and am continuing to have with my calcium was, and still is totally self-induced. Even as bad as the pain got for me I still have days that I blow it off and don't take what I should, and yet I live and breath this every minute of every day. WE have to take responsibility for our actions, we have to be accountable and look in the mirror and see where the problems lie, because I can tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt that statistics show those patients who take their supplements as instructed from the start and follow a high protein, low fat, low carb diet do not have these issues. Those of us that haven't done that are the ones trying to figure out where the DS went wrong.... I have spoken to Jo about this before. Dee's calcium crash happened around the 4 years. Also, this rebound weight seems to hit at the 4 year mark. I have also had other people tell me their labs went the wrong way around the 4 year mark, and they had to up their vits to improve. Guest guest
Hi Dee, When I first met you two years ago you told me your story about the problems you faced when you stopped taking your vitamins and calcium. It really hit home for me and I take mine because of your story. I am the kind of person who could easily think that I was getting all my nutrients from food and think I didn't need the supplements so I thank you for sharing with me your story and helping me to not get in the rut of not taking them. I also eat healthier now and have learned the foods to just stay away from. I have a list of foods to avoid and a list for foods that my body really likes. My body can really feel the effects of eating good or eating bad. When I eat good, my body is happy. When I eat junk, I pay dearly. So, I choose to make my body happy. Does everyone else relate to this. Not the part about eating unhealthy and paying for it but the part about eating good and your body feels it?? I am a little over 2 years post-op. I have gained 3 pounds and am up and down one pound. I have to admit that I really like to eat and that is part of the problem. I hardly ever sit down anymore to a big meal. I just eat a protein bar here and some corn nuts there, lol. I eat when I am hungry and I try to eat things my body likes. I still fall into eating too much sometimes in the evenings which is the hardest time of the day for me. However, school is going to start soon and I eat less then. I also walk a lot more. My nephew came to live with me a week or so ago and he is a personal trainer at CA family fitness. So, he has been working with me. He put me on a exercise regimen. He also tells me what to eat and when. I hate to exercise too so this is hard for me. But, the first day I did the exercise I lost 2 pounds. I do agree that we are in somewhat control of the outcomes of our labs. We just need to make sure we are getting them done and then following up with any changes that we need to incorporate. Keep taking those supplements and keep feeding your body healthy foods and don't forget the exercise and all should be well in the universe, lol. I need to order some more devrom today. I also need to order some ADEKs. My vitamin A is a little low Dr K said when I saw him last week. I think the devrom helps not only with odor control but it seems to help bind up the bowel movement?? I was taking it when I went to mexico and the whole time I was there I had normal (as in before surgery) bm's. I was eating corn tortillas and tamales but still I eat a lot of fiber here and they aren't as normal. I will get more devrom and do an experiment to see, lol. Take care everyone. -- **Wake me up from the nothing that I've become** --------- Re: Re: A question for the Ladies of the group What I mean by dreaded 4 year mark - is that, a lot of us seem to crash a little around the 4 year mark. Guest guest
Those of us that haven't > done that are the ones trying to figure out where the DS went wrong.... > > Dee Tinkle > ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~` I know I have made bad choices but so far I have never thought my DS has gone wrong...That has been ME that has gone wrong... I think I am going to be like Marta and set the alarm clock on my cell so I know when to get that calcium in...I do think that anyone that can should try that Cal 100 with vit D that right there is 1000units of calcium, then I only have 3000 more to go I take 500 with my pills first thing in am...I was taking them again when I got up to pee in the middle of the night, but now I am taking my thyroid when I go to bed and it says not to take calcium with it... Yep, it all up to US we have to make the decision on where we have good results for the DS and it is up to US to use these TOOL the way it is suppose to be used...I also think that when a person has the DS and they start taking their supplements , they should start taking a iron pill especially those that are still having periods....sorry men It is better to be safe than sorry... Dee, thank you for writing that,it has opened my eyes again, and I always need a reminder that " IT IS UP TO ME TO KEEP UP ON MY SUPPLEMENTS " no one else is going to do it for me... Ok i am off my tiny soap box,[can't raise leg high enough to have big soap box} Have a blessed weekend and take those supplements... Oh, one more thing, I read on the main board how many of them have stoped thinking of the DS as a tool, and many of them are having problems...I know that I eat wrong and I am messing up my tool. God bless, Pat
