Hypothyroid and Celiac

Hmmm, after reading all of the other posts about 's appointment with Dr. Kittley, I'm even more curious. I was not aware of the relationship between the two. My husband had his thyroid removed due to papillary ThyCa in Aug. of 2004. He's had 3 additional surgeries since then, and now has some pretty impressive doctors at MD . Unfortunately, has been having gastrointestinal problems for quite a while now. I've suggested that he go see a doctor about it...as have his parents. Why? Because his father has Celiac. Was diagnosed over 20 years ago. But hubby is...as usual...bull-headed. He has an appointment with his PCP next month...I *may* be able to convince him to ask the doc about the blood test. His PCP is aware of the family history, but hasn't indicated that he thinks Mark may also have Celiac. From what I've read, the symptoms are similar: cramping, bloating, loss of appetite (though it seems to be improving). Hubby's diahrrea is gone, but he has several bowel movements each day, much more than he used to. He (hubby) feels it's due to all the meds he's on. He's on Levoxyl, 3 blood pressure meds, calcium (parathyroid damage), and Calcitrol (Rx vitamin D to go w/ the calcium). And in his defense, his symptoms have improved since his cancer endo drastically cut back his calcium. In addition, he started taking his other meds (except for the Levoxyl) with food. He forgot to take his BP meds and calcium one day this week (working late hours), and was completely cramp-free the next day. So he *may* be on to something. I know I could talk until I'm blue in the face, but he's not going to submit himself to another specialist for more tests unless he's

utterly, completely miserable. And of course, he'll take me to Misery with him...haha!! I suggested just the other day that he let me cut out gluten in our lives for a few weeks to see how he felt after that. No go. So I didn't push it. It's bad enough that he has to go on the low iodine diet for 2 weeks this summer...that's going to be a huge battle, I know!! Anyway, I'm going to let him handle it I guess. He said he would talk to his PCP first about cutting back the number of BP meds to see if that made a difference. Overall, he's in the best mood that he's been in since this ordeal began almost 2 years ago, so I'm enjoying our time together lately. It's amazing how quickly you can learn to choose your battles!! :o)

Sneak preview the all-new Yahoo.com. It's not radically different. Just radically better.

Stacie if his dad had it there is a good change that he does. You can go to Dr.Kittley's website and find the link to Celiac..it is a genetic disease. Nobody in my family has been diagnosed with it and I am not yet convinced, but it sounds like your husband should certainly have the tests. I had never even heard of it before. I have learned a lot this week.

Good Luck,
