If this were true the numbers of mentally retarded children would be going down, which they are not. Probably the best studies (counts) of children with Autism have been done in California to date. They have concluded that, although they haven't determined the reason, there is a true increase in numbers of children with Autism, not just a diagnostic shift. Hope this helps :-) Sharon
Guest guest
I saw a chart the other day that gave what I consider to be accurate numbers for the increase in autism. In the last ten years, on the same chart, other diagnoses have gone up 23%. They should have dropped dramatically if those kids were simply being reclassified. I'm sorry I don't have the chart any more. The chart was made from demands for special services at public schools. jane On Oct 11, 2004, at 10:58 AM, Dixienyc@... wrote: > > > What is the most accurate and scientifically factual response to > people that > say autism is not an epidemic, doctors just have better screening > procedures. > These kids were always there but in the past they were being diagnosed > as > mentally retarded or emotional disturbed. > > I hear this so often and really need to know the facts to effectively > address > this falsehood. Guest guest
, have them read this paper: it is the most thorough evaluation of the data, and refutes all of the change/better diagnosis stuff. If doctors have better screening procedures, then that means the epidemic has been with us a lot longer, and there are a lot of undiagnosed people - but where are they? 1:125 means almost 1%. good luck, Autism in the United States: a Perspective - New Paper F. Yazbak, M.D., F.A.A.P. Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons Volume 8 Number 4 WInter 2003 http://jpands.org/vol8no4/yazbak.pdf ABSTRACT " Once rare, autism has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. The increase cannot be attributed to changes in diagnostic criteria, which have actually become more restrictive. Already a heavy burden on educational facilities, the increasing number of patients afflicted with this serious disability will have an enormous effect on the economy as the affected children reach adulthood. Studies of all possible causes of the epidemic are urgently needed. To date, studies of a potential relationship to childhood vaccines have been limited and flawed " Appropriate Response What is the most accurate and scientifically factual response to people that say autism is not an epidemic, doctors just have better screening procedures. These kids were always there but in the past they were being diagnosed as mentally retarded or emotional disturbed. I hear this so often and really need to know the facts to effectively address this falsehood. Thanks,

Autism in the United >States: a Perspective - New Paper >Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons Volume 8 Number 4 WInter 2003 If it was me I'd probably use some of the references that come from a credible source rather than a paper from an extreme anti-mainstream, anti-government, anti-vaccine alternative journal. The paper includes a combination of credible info with some that's very questionable. For background ....the info below comes directly from those connected with this publication. the Medical Sentinel discussed below is now called the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons --------------------------------------------------------------------------------\ ----- In conclusion, individuals involved in this perversion of science, public health, and medicine and who masquerade as unbiased objective researchers have at best a non-existent utopia in mind that has never existed, a world without conflict, ordinary citizens unarmed and in blissful conformity with the state, violence eradicated, homicides extinguished, false security attained. At worst, they militate for Big Brother unopposed, social engineering without limits, conformity by force (if necessary), opposition crushed, and the state reigning supreme. If their Utopian socialist vision were to become reality, we would then herald a brave new world where individual citizens would, for their own good, be placed at the mercy of the state central planners. The goal of gun control research promulgated by the AMA/CDC/NCIPC axis is designed to promote conformity, that is, the idea that guns (even for self and family protection) are socially unacceptable; and to promote uniformity, that is, in citizen disarmament. The lessons of history sagaciously reveal that whenever and wherever science and medicine have been subordinated to the state and individual will has been crushed by tyranny, the results have been as perverse as they have been disastrous, as the examples of Nazi Germany and the former Soviet Union so aptly testify. Beyond the abolition of freedom and dignity, the perversion of science and medicine becomes the vehicle for the imposition of slavery and totalitarianism. But, the fact that AAPS [which has aptly been called " The Delta Force of American Medicine " ] is resurgent; the fact that today AAPS has a new journal, the Medical Sentinel, " a beacon of hope in medical journalism, " committed to publishing scholarly articles in defense of liberty and the practice of private medicine; the fact that the AAPS stands for the tenets and principles set forth in the Oath of Hippocrates; and the fact that AAPS continues to fight for individually-based medical ethics and the sanctity of the patient-doctor relationship --- are all incontrovertible evidence that the fight for intellectual freedom is far from over, and that you, as an AAPS member, would not idly sit by while the powers-that-be seek to effect the perversion of science and medicine for their own political purposes. Footnote * Just recently, the AMA set a new policy to direct their lobbyists to " strongly advocate " for the restoration of funding for the CDC/NCIPC.(6) Delta Force new world order. The socialists of the world want tighter controls over the American people and they fear attempting to exert too much control while so many of us are armed and skilled with our firearms. _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger!
