Dentistry metals question

I'm new to this group because I have a little guy with autism, and am planning on starting Valtrex for him soon. In the meantime, I have a question for anyone who knows something about porcelain-fused-to-metal dental crowns and metals toxicity.

Last year I had a new crown fitted for one of my teeth and made it crystal clear to my dentist that I wanted the new crown to be porcelain so as to remove all metal from my mouth. Around the same time I had my last 6 mercury dental amalgams replaced with porcelain.

So I got the replacements and thought I was "home-free," until today! I went back for a cleaning, and asked for a panoramic x-ray just in case an infection had developed around an old root canal. When the image returned, there were bright white areas in the area of the new "porcelain" crown, as well as bright white areas where the old mercury amalgams had been.

When I asked why those bright areas existed, the dental hygienist said, "Oh your crown is a porcelain-fused-to-metal" crown and it's the metal that is showing up white. She then didn't give a clear answer about the white areas where my metal amalgams used to be, and I just sort of went numb. I thought the metals had been taken out of my mouth, and here they were staring back at me on the x-ray image!

Are the "modern" porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns less toxic than the old ones? Also, did the bright white areas around my amalgams point to leftover mercury under the new porcelain amalgam replacements? Under these circumstances, could I ever consider chelation for mercury? Or, am I just as toxic as before in my mouth?
