Guest guest Report post Posted November 22, 1999 Hello, Our daughter Olivia had tubes placed a 14 months after many an ear infection. Prior to ear tubes her equaliberium was off not allowing her to control her balance to sit. Since placement she was able to sit with out support. She also was able to pull herself up to stand by 16 months. We have however had one ear infection since then but other than that everything is doing well. Good Luck!! Guest guest Report post Posted November 29, 1999 i have undergone 9 operations since i was a baby to place the tube. except for the last one that was done an year ago (i am 19 now), after all operations, my hearing improved... also.. because of the tubes.. when i get ear infections, my eardrums didn't hurt as much.. i hope this help susane ----Original Message Follows---- From: petenang@... dwarfismonelist Subject: Tubes Date: Fri, 19 Nov 1999 16:05:55 -0600 Hi everyone. My husband and I don't post much, but we do try to keep up with everything on the list. We just took our 9 month old son Drew (achondroplasia) to see an ENT doctor. We were referred to her because of fluid in his ears. A hearing test showed some mild hearing loss, and she suggested that we should get tubes placed. My questions are: Have any of your children gone through this at such a young age? Have you seen any benefits? Did their hearing dramatically improve? Is there anything we should know about before we put Drew through this? Thank you in advance for your help. We just want to be as informed as possible. Guest guest Report post Posted October 11, 2001 I think got his first set at age 9 months. That was the first of 8 sets tubes > I just had a question for anyone.. Myah is nine months and supposed to be getting tubes becasue of repeat results of fliud in her ears. She has had 2 ear infections. The hearing tests that they tried to perform showed her not responding until 60-65 decibels, but everyone around her including her Early Intervention team knows she can hear and well. It's hard to give a hearing test to a nine month old, because sometimes she just doesn't care if you call her name. The dr ordered a brain stem test to be done while she is still under sedation from getting tubes. Although she says her ears may be too small for tubes and she would just drain it and do the hearing test. The catch is that she says the tymp results may be false also because her ears are so small. I just don't want to put her through something that's not needed-at least not right now. I really wasn't comfortable with the Dr visit and how she was evalutaed although she was referred to me highly by many people. Just wanted to get your thoughts on this. Did anyone have a child with tubes this young? Her EI team can't think of anyone who had them this young. Any input would be greatly appreciated. I am seriuosly thinking of cancelling this surgery. > > > PS Myah's speech is progressing well-saying mama, dada, baba, tries to sing patty cake.. and so on!! > > > >

Guest guest Report post Posted October 11, 2001 That's kinda what I was thinking. I waited 2 hours to be seen when I took Myah and she was obviously fussy by the time we got in. They didn't have exam rooms, just a chair to check the ears and they didn't do vitals. Somehing just seems odd to me. When they told me the plan, they gave me paperwork to fill out dates that were good for me and I had to mail them in and they mailed my surgery time. Also the only explanation I got was the paper they gave me. The more I think about it ,the weirder it seems to me. Oh yea, they also have you precert your own surgery with the insurance company!! Guest guest Report post Posted October 11, 2001 Hey Gabby had tubes placed at 6 months old after having plenty of ear infections and fluid issues. The tubes stayed put for a little over a year, fell out on their own like they should, and she hasn't needed them since. She had brain stem testing done at about 18 months and it revealed no hearing impairment / issues. My son Adam had tubes placed at about 18 months and has not had one infection since... it's been about 8 months. Big accomplishment after having them nonstop. They have not fallen out yet. BTW I LOVE my kids' ENT. Just random knowledge It really got to the point where they were on antibiotic after antibiotic - that's just not something I feel comfortable with. Heck I have issues with cough syrup. Sandy mom to le (5, ds-asd) and Adam (2) Re: tubes I think I would get another opinion. Jessie

Guest guest Report post Posted October 12, 2001 was 12 months old when he got tubes...I wish he'd gotten them sooner. All that fluid really affects their hearing, and at such a crucial time for speech development. You might want to get a second opinion, but their hearing is sooooo important, I wouldn't put it off...IMHO. R. Guest guest Report post Posted October 12, 2001 I am guessing by the number of replies to this post that there are lots of babies like my Hannah who had tubes put in at or around this age. Hannah's tubes have JUST fallen out and will need to be put in again as she has been sick since they came out. Poor baby... with a good ENT, it's not too scary of a procedure. Certainly preferable to Open Heart! Connie

Guest guest Report post Posted October 12, 2001 had four sets of tubes, starting when he was one years old. They have done well for him. The last pair was three years ago and I noticed one fell out at the beginning of the summer. He has gotten many ear infections this summer and this last month, he had a lot of drainage. I'm thinking about having another pair put in. He will go to the audiologist again for a hearing test as soon as I can get the infection cleared up. I was really hoping that he wouldn't need tubes anymore but I am afraid that his hearing has gotten worse because of all the drainage. Has anyone gotten tubes for their child after age 10? Guest guest Report post Posted October 12, 2001 we had Lucas have Tubes put in twice and then even T-tubes(reminded me of the old IUD's) a T shape that expands out to a T once in place. They need to be surgically removed!! Lucas' came out all by them selves!!! Needless to say, we are still fighting wholes in his eardrums. Guest guest Report post Posted October 13, 2001 Hi Heidi, Do you know whether the tubes were plastic or metal? My daughter had metal ones put in and they stayed in for over a year. I actually found one that came out. I notice it lying in the outer part of her ear while I was giving her a bath. ~ Mom to ,7, DS Kasey,16, PKU
