Samchigirl,Memantine is used to treat people with moderate to severe alzheimers.

Anyone heard of this drug? It's apparently in use in Europe to treat

Altzheimers, with better results than Exelon, Reminyl and Aricept.

Not released in the US yet, but I'm wondering if anyone has an

experience with it in Canada/UK/Australia/NZ or any of the other

countries we may be reaching.

Yes Memantine( Ebixa, it's brand name) is used here for the treatment of

moderately severe to severe Alzheimers.

It was launched here in October 02.

It's different from all other drugs used to treat alzheimers here in the UK as

they are all used to treat mild to moderate stages of the disease.

It is not licensed here to treat any other type of dementia, although i do know

that there is research being done into it's use with Vascular Dementia, as a

result it may one day be open for use with LBD as sufferers often(like my

granda) have TIA's and heart problems, the only thing i would tend to worry

about though is it has to be given with caution to people with heart problems

and BP problems so unless the research rules otherwise it may not help LBD at

all.

One of the side effects of this drug are hallucinations therefore if it was

taken with other LBD drugs you would still have the same 'one cancelling out the

other effect', like with quetiapine and madopar.

So overall i think at the end of the day, the only way to find out whether it

works or not is to give it to people, after all that's what has been going on

with the neuroleptic drugs which were only ever meant for people with

Schzophrenia and are now used to treat LBD hallucinations.
