If your metabolic problem is a fast metabolism I suggest you read The

Metabolic Typing Diet by Wolcott. There's explanation of magnesium's

contraindication to fast metabolisms. Calcium is better.

What is your metabolic problem and what improvement are you looking for?

Why to you think that increasing your magnesium levels will help? How do

you know if your magnesium levels are too low?

Yup! Did calcium/mag/zinc, multi mineral, magnesium alone even over years,

thinking all along magnesium deficiency with little reward. Calcium and

zinc, walla! Phosphorus is needed too. Can't find it as a separate 250mg.

supplement. SAD processed foods loaded with it added in. Any ideas?

thanks for the respone. I have a mg problem, no doubt about it. I

have had little response to a Sally fallon diet.

Improper diet for any metabolism or metabolic type can create one disorder

in a few people. Metabolic typing will find different diets between the few

that relieve the same disorder. The causes and cures are not the same.

What are you doing out of (NT)Nourishing Traditions? There are many

variations and adaptations between the people on this list? What was your

prior diet and how have you changed that going to NT?

I am _so_ not an expert here, but I do have experiences that are similar to

what you are describing. My guess is that your magnesium problem is a

symptom and that it is probably a waste of time to be trying to fix it with

supplements. For some reason your body is not processing magnesium

correctly and your best bet would be to find a nutritional path that will

help you heal along with a course of detoxes that will rid your body of the

accumulated toxicity you have accrued over the years. I have been detoxing

both involuntarily and by choice since September of 2001 and am just now

reaching a level of physical and mental health that I consider to be

tolerable. Knowing what I know now I'm sure that I could have increased the

speed of this process, but the fact is that it can take a fair amount of

time for your body to rid itself of past damage and heal up. There is a lot

of trial and error. If you aren't seeing change then you have to do

something different, right?

In a word, no. :-) But let me qualify that by saying that I've given up on

trying to balance my mineral levels with supplements for the time being.

My story is pretty long and involved and I don't have time to write up the

whole thing here but let me just summarize by saying that I got my first

indication that I had mineral deficiencies from a hair test ordered up by my

chiropractor in mid-2003. He put me on supplements that made no difference.

The next step in the process was a visit to Dr. Mercola's office in December

of 2003. He had me tested for my metabolic type (hard protein) and based on

his reading of a new hair test put me on some very high quality mineral

supplements that also made no difference after many months. For several

reasons I stopped working with Dr. Mercola and have been on my own path

since about May of 2004. I have been struggling somewhat with making and

eating the correct food choices since that time. I think my mineral

imbalances are a symptom of a more fundamental problem and have been trying

to figure out the nutritional and detox/cleansing path to correcting that

problem. That is what lead me to WAP and the NN/NT style of eating in the

fall of 2004.

So all of that to say that, for now, I'm not supplementing very much and am

really trying to do some heavy detoxing while finding the foods that are

correct for me and allowing my body to heal itself over the next year or so.

After I have gotten to some currently undetermined place of understanding I

will look again at my mineral levels and figure out where to go from there.

Hey Ron,

If it's not too personal, and you have the time: what kind of heavy

detoxing are you doing, man, and/or what have you found to be the most

helpful?

There is a technique called Applied Kinesiology. Reportedly it allows

you to test substances such as foods, vitamins, minerals or anything

to find out if they are helpful or harmful to your well-being. It's a

simple test that uses your muscle strength as an indicator.

Sodium monophosphate, maybe? The Perfect Prescription tooth soap people

recommend it, anyway, at the rate of 1/4g per 40# body weight.
