Guest guest
I wonder if anyone else has experienced this. When our son was 2...he had a g tube put in, because he was not gaining weight. He still was able to eat pureed foods, with some degree of success. We were happy and used the g tube to supplement him. Last December...after 3 months of him spitting out food, excessively drooling, and choking.. we took him finally for a swallow study with our GI and nutrition group at Connecticut Childrens Hospt. What we saw was an entire mass of food...go right into the air way. And he didnt cough for 2 minutes. Immediately we were told that we should not feed him via mouth...the risk for aspiration was too high. He apparently lost the motor skill to swallow safely. And now, he is completely on the g tube. He is no longer congested. He has not been sick. He doesnt choke, although the drool is still problematic. His weight is a problem, he is 8 and only weighs about 40 pounds. But the frustrating part is we seem to have gone backwards. He still can not swallow correctly. And we are not sure if he will ever. What are everyone elses experiences with eating. ...as he has aged...has changed so dramatically. Thanks. Mom to ..

Guest guest
Have you tried metabolic tests? Perhaps his body is not breaking down the food properly? Or maybe he has a genetic problem that is undiagnosed and he is just going to be small? Just throwing out some ideas. Does he have a medical diagnosis right now? Is the fact that he is underweight causing him problems with development? C. I wonder if anyone else has experienced this. Guest guest
Hi, I just read about your son. My son started not growing regularly at about 3. Long story but we finally got him to an endocrinologist who did a test for CELIAC disease. This is the definition: A lifelong autoimmune intestinal disorder, found in individuals who are genetically susceptible. Damage to the mucosal surface of the small intestine is caused by an immunologically toxic reaction to the ingestion of gluten and interferes with the absorption of nutrients. Celiac Disease (CD) is unique in that a specific food component, gluten, has been identified as the trigger. Gluten is the common name for the offending proteins in specific cereal grains that are harmful to persons with CD. These proteins are found in all forms of wheat (including durum, semolina, spelt, kamut, einkorn, and faro), and related grains, rye, barley, and triticale and must be eliminated. WE HAD NO IDEA that he had this. He never seemed to having diarrhea or eating problems just wasn't growing. It's very common (1 in 100 ppl) but often not diagnosed. We were so lucky to have found this. He is now on a gluten free diet.. for 1 month now and we think we already see a change... his pants seem shorter, unbelievable I know. I can't confirm this because we won't officially get the weigh in until 3 months but I can tell you that we think it's already affecting him positively. Please get your dr. to look into it and have a iga/igg and ttg test done. Also... you may want to look up the disease as many people are asymptomatic but it can lead to even bigger problems if undiagnosed. www.celiac.com Please email me off list if you want to ask more.
