do as photogs do for their camera film...put the grains in clear plastic baggies

that can be hand inspected. A simple request should not delay you any at all.

They may test for bomb chemical residue with a towelette, but that should be it.

Don't try and hide it or they may wonder why...

As long as it doesn't look like marijuana seeds I'm sure you will be alright.

Kefir grains and airports

OK,

I KNOW we've had this discussion before, but I couldn't find a

definitive answer to my question in the archives, so:

I'm planning on taking some kefir grains with me across the country to

CA. I'll be traveling via plane. These are the options I'm willing

to consider (and please don't suggest that I do an " Aajanous " and make

a stink at the JFK security checkpoint two days before xmas):

1. Put the grains in a glass jar in my carry-on luggage--will be scanned.

2. Put the grains in a glass jar in a checked bag.

3. Put the grains in my nether regions, mule-style. Or somewhere else

on my body that won't attract attention or set off the metal detector.

Actually, this is a great opportunity for a scientific experiment!

Hmmmm. I don't have too many grains at the moment, but I'll consider

sacrificing them in the name of science by subjecting one sample to

each scenario above.

Any advice? I'm pretty sure #1 will kill my babies.

TIA,

This is what I did, and they seemed to fare just fine.

Or wrap them in a kleenex and stuff it in your pocket. They can

travel dry just fine for a couple of days. If they DO inspect your

crumpled up old kleenex, well, they'll probably look like goop

you cleaned up from somewhere. If they ask what it is, you

can tell them, but so far I've never had them ask what the stuff

is I carry (even my lunch, which has stuff like dried anchovies

in it).

You could gently rinse your grains in filtered water, dry for 5 minutes

on paper towels, and then shake them in a bag with dry milk powder.

No messy liquid to worry about, and they look like candy when you

put them in a sandwich bag. Assuming your flight is 48 hours or

less, your grains will immediately wake back up when placed in milk.

This method also works if you ship them Priority in advance. I shipped

some this way from Texas to Connecticut, and they arrived in good

condition.
