Guest guest
My daughter never had sleep issues until she went on Zoloft, a couple of weeks into it she started having problems. She goes to sleep quickly at night, she will even just go get in bed and fall asleep when she is tired now but before she could stay up late if we were out but not anymore. She appears to be sleeping when I look at her but she moves alot now. She said she wakes up throughout the night and now she cant sleep past 5 or 6 am and she says that she feels like she hasnt slept in days. Â Her autoimmune issues are hypothyroidism which is completely under control and has been for many years (just saw the endocrinologist) and she has alopecia areata. She also has Common Variable Immune Deficiency which has been under control since she was a baby. This all started when she went on Zoloft. Â I have discussed this with the psychiatrist, the answer I got was " maybe she is getting her period " ....well the endocrinologist had just told me that she is behind in that aspect and it would be more like 2 years before that happens. Whenever I bring up a concern about the Zoloft I am completley shot down.....I am not happy about this. On the other hand I want to give the medicine time to work. We do not know what her dose of Zoloft is because she is in a medicine study but I know it is less than 100mg. Â It seems to me that she needs something to keep her asleep and to help her brain rest at night. I am ready to call it quits on this medicine, there is only 6 weeks left of the study and all treatment is free until then so I wanted to really give it a try. And as usual as soon as I want to call it quits she will have a couple of good days where she isnt tired then I change my mind. Â Before the zoloft she was completely healthy and a very happy kid that slept at night and woke up with a smile at 7am on the dot. Â I am not having a good day today...I just want my happy daughter back! Â ...mom to Sara " just right OCD " Â Â Â Â Â > > > I read that Melatonin shouldnt be used by people with autoimmune diseases, my daughter has two, then what is an alternative??? > > I am not happy that the Dr told us to use it knowing her health history. Guest guest
it certainly sounds like it is the zoloft from what you describe, if nothing else has changed. In this case a change to another ssri would make sense, but since you are in the study this is not an option unless you opt out. I'm sorry I forget how long you've been in the study, how long she's been on the zoloft? Is the research being done specific to zoloft or at some point can this be changed? Do they allow the addition of any other medication, something to help with sleep. Surely there must be some latitude to deal with this kind of thing. When there is research being done they are invested in keeping you in the study, it sounds like this might be why you are " shot down " when you raise this concern. I have had family members in similar situations, and it is a problem with being part of a study. Is the zoloft helping with the OCD at least??? Guest guest
. When I tried Zoloft, I had horrible insomnia. It lasted for months after I stopped the stuff. > > My daughter never had sleep issues until she went on Zoloft, a couple of weeks into it she started having problems. Guest guest
If she was sleeping well and happy prior to the trial I would slowly reduce the medication and get her off of it. I do not like the idea that she got a dose of zoloft that was not gradually increased. That concerns me. Problems surface with big increases. My daughter was getting up at night when she started zoloft to go to the bathroom. She had never done this prior. But her anxiety was so high it was a reasonable trade off and she woke up rested too. After about 7 months this stopped. But I would have been concerned if her mood was not improved on the zoloft. We give her the zoloft in the morning. Some people say zoloft makes them tired and they take it at night. If there is any history of mood disorders in the family I would be concerned too. Is it possible she is more depressed since this trial began?
