I bet you're eating more of it than you realize ;)

Here's the list of " corn words " that we had to avoid for my son's

allergy: http://www.cornallergens.com/list/corn-allergen-list.php

Hi ,

I think we can all remember when it was so new to us. The good & bad news

for you is that there is so much more info out about how to treat our kids,

that it's extremely difficult to sift thru all the info. You're right that

it's easier to ask us than to do all the researching yourself & get it from

" the experts " , other parents & people on the spectrum & some professionals

involved with our children who are on this group.

Hannah is probably " high functioning " if she was so late in getting

diagnosed? Or were there not any professionals who noticed her behaviors

early enough to diagnose her sooner?

You did well in finding a listserve to get on & get info from. Networking,

I find, is the best way to get info about advocating for your child. In

your particular area, is there a parent support group/listserve that you can

join? That way, you can find local info about various professionals to go

see, what services are available in your state for Hannah.

Is your husband supportive or is he in denial & you're getting no help from

him? Just getting an autism diagnosis is difficult, but depending on your

family dynamics, it definitely adds to the strain. You are doing the best

that you can & I'm sure will continue to do so for Hannah. You also have

other children, so hepefully they will understand that for a while, you'll

be busy trying to get info to help Hannah. How old are your other kids? If

they are old enough, you can solicit their help, like around the house to

relieve some of those burdens off your shoulder. It might help your husband

to talk to some other dads to get the male perspective, or even to get on

this listserve so he can get info for himself.

Jim (my husband) PhD at AZ State University, President of the GPCASA

(Greater Phoenix Chapter of the Autism society of America), autism treatment

researcher, exec member of the DAN (Defeat Autism Now-a biomedical treatment

conference) & mainly to let you know he is legit & knowledgeable on autism,

has a website, autism.asu.edu (no www), that has a newly diagnosed info &

also a 28 page biomedical treatment summary that can be downloaded. That

may help " simplify " things for you a little. Feel free to email me at

marie.adams@....

Remember, you are not alone! We have been there before you & will help you

as much as we can on this difficult journey.

Corn is not bad, but try to mixit up with something else, and do not

replace everything with corn, because it is very easy to get

sensitivities to it, specially if the gut is not completely clean and

healthy.

Sensitivities to food are inherited from the mother, or they develop

from leaky gut, and it can result in a yeast overgrowth

Oh my goodness!! That is horrible. I am so sorry.

Food Allergies is one thing that I am trying to figure

out. All of my kids have eczema. It has gotten better

since I have cute out dairy, peanut butter, eggs. My

son is 3 and still has a little bit on the arms. I

have had all my kids blood checked for allergies but

not very much comes up. For example, I know that they

react to dairy but the lab say it is fine. I wonder

if I should cute out corn from his diet and see what

happens.

I have ezcema from food allergies and the best way that I have found is to do

the Elimination Diet to figure out what I am allergic to. I have never had the

lab tests done before, but I have heard that some people have had it done and it

shows that you don't have problems with a certain food and they actually do.

Good luck figuring it out....it sure can be tricky. Gwen

I think the best thing to do for allergies is to do IgG testing every

3-6mos, and to do rotation diets in the meanwhile to prevent new

sensitivities. After Allie went gfcf she had a far higher IgG to rice

than gluten or casein. The thing is, if we eliminate everything we

hear each other say their kids were bothered by, we'd have to eat

air...unless you hear about the poor air quality reports! Lol.

Another thought, are you treating gut/immune issues? The more gut

problems, the more likely to have food sensitivities.

Thankfully, he outgrew his corn allergy. But we had to do the corn

free diet for over two years.

He never tested positive for anything either. We did blood tests and

skin tests. Well, we never did a skin test for corn, because he was so

sensitive all you had to do was eat a corn chip and kiss him and he'd

break out in hives. Even my toothpaste did that to him. So his

allergist said a skin test for corn was pointless. He also told me

that none of the allergy tests are 100% accurate, and the only way to

know for sure if your child has an allergy or intolerance is to take

the food away, see if things get better, and re-introduce it and see

if the symptoms come back.

Yes, that is true. I am not sure if I am ready for the

elimination diet. I am having a hard enough time with

GFCF.

No...I have not but I should. I am battling along

with my daughter. I just didn't think about my son

having an issue with it. I will start giving him the

probiotics consistently now too.

Thanks,

I don't know. In a way, elimination diets are easier. If you are

limited to just a few foods, it takes away a lot of the " what can I

eat? " You already know, it's x, y, or z, nothing else. Besides, most

elimination diets are pretty short term. My son's symptoms cleared up

in only a week on his elimination diet and then we started adding

foods back in. Of course, that depends on the food too, some foods

take a lot longer to clear completely from your body...Dairy usually

takes the longest and can take up to 8 weeks to totally be gone.
