Shanna, wow...that does give me hope for Destiney! She does walk..she also has

cerebral palsey so she kind of limps and hops alot. But she is non-verbal and

she just doesnt get the concept of the toliet...I am sure that she is as much

frustrated...if not more...with me trying to potty train her. What did you have

your daughter do if she pooped/peed on herself? Destiney really does not take

part in her personal care...I try to have her help but she kind of just stands

there like " you want me to do what?! " ...I dont know if she gets what I am asking

her and just refuses or if she really just doesnt understand. Her right side is

affected by the cerebral palsey and is alot weaker. She has some control over

her right hand and leg...but not alot. So that plays a big role in teaching her

how to dress and undress herself as well...which she really doesnt do either.

It is just so hard to tell what she is picking up on and what she isnt.

Sometimes I find out from her teacher that she has learned to do something and I

was still doing it for her...the little stinker! lol But for the most part she

is fully dependent on me...unfortunately. I love her to pieces...I just really

hope and pray that one day her autism would be lifted from her...it would be a

welcomed miracle.

I really hear you on the serenity prayer...I must say that that would have made

my day, week, or month as well!! To hear those words out of my daughters mouth

would be a blessing. Sometimes she will make a new sound...such as blah,

blah...thats her new sound...and I listen intensly to see if anything else comes

out...its such an emotional thing for me. She can now make the sounds

eye,eye,eye,...blah, blah, blah, and d,d,d.. Its like she chooses a sound and

repeats it all day long. She used to say ma, ma, ma...but then somehow she lost

it. After she lost her speech thats what she would repeat...mama...and now its

gone...I dont know why.

Sometimes I think to myself if we could just figure out what got unplugged in

children like ours...what a finding that would be...what would our children tell

us? At times I see Destiney looking off into space and smiling and I

think...what is she thinking of...or are angels whispering to her...I know it

sounds strange but that is what I think like maybe angels are speaking to her.

What great examples, Sondra! I love it! I can relate to that so much being the

mother of , 12 years-autism. She has such a funny way of seeing things. I

actually laugh a lot too. 's older siblings are always telling stories at

school to their friends. I wish could be where Missy is about " friends " .

She says she has friends. When we go over to their houses (she requests to go

there), she wants to watch tv at their house or play with their dog. She is not

interested in them. How do I get further in this?

trained? Sorry so many questions!

Missy has a year or so of sign language and slowly language just

began for her. It was a slow progress in the begin but by age of 4

1/2 or so she was very verbal. Not up to par with peers in

chronilogical age but speaking. Before the only vocalizations were of

ooohhh weee which was repeated much of the day over and over. she was

a toe walker, and a wrist flapper. Prolonged tantrums that lasted for

hours of her spinning self and head banging, or sitting in her day

dream world doing nothing but staring off into space.

the toileting was a slow progress too and even though she is of 13

she still is afected greatly by encopresis and smears and leaks out

stool so she wears a pad daily and changes if prompted but she often

carrys an odor of soiled mess because of the encopresis and we are of

still working on this with her due to social impacts it creates for

her. she is very developed for a 13 year old which is of also a great

concern for me with boys. One example of her auitsm issues still is

not relating to waht is present in front of her such as in group tey

kids all had to create an imaginary sea monster and the kids each had

to tell of the therapist of what they were to have seen or imagined

seeing, so when the picture was done it looked like a fat shark with

sharp teeth swimming in the ocean but when asked of missy what title

they should give the story she shared the happy penguin? not related

at all to teh picture of theme of a scary sea monster the kids as a

whole created. Also her therapy groups are called friendships club

and so we pasted a nursing retirment home like place called

friendship village and she noticed it and sahred mommy look Dr. Amigo

has a friendship village too and I to want to live of there when I

grow up t be near all my friends. She is of such a funny kid and

brings me much humor in her verbalized expressions of her real

thinking within her. She is into rap lately so trying to discourage

it but she telled me is there such things as a rich preppy ganster as

she wants to be one? LOL ( she lacks what a real ganster is she

things it is of a style of dress)

LOL ( she lacks what a real ganster is she

things it is of a style of dress)

.....how did your daughter come to be able to speak? Was she making any

vocalizations before? And how did she become potty trained? Sorry so many

questions!

All Ally used to say was, " dkka, dkka, dkka, " and once in a while she would

echo words, but even that was not very often. She was in special ed

preschool half days, five days a week, speech and OT at one of our local

hospitals each twice a week and speech with a speech therapist/autism

specialist twice a week. I did not feel like any of the therapy was doing

ANYTHING to help her except cause her more stress...having to go into so

many environments.

I was looking through the phone book one day and found a guy who did kinetic

energy therapy. I really had no idea what that was, but I called him and

the first consultation and treatment was free so I took her. He did some,

" energy tests? " on her and said that she did not have a dominant side of her

brain....like most of us do..that is what makes you right handed or left

handed, coordinated and such. Then, he did some other energy things to her

and said she would be better. He also told me to feed her turkey for her

anxiety, and said it would help calm her down. I pretty much thought he was

a little bit crazy, but shortly after that her balance started to improve

and she seemed more focused to be able to learn. She used to run into

things a lot too and she almost immediately stopped doing that.

I also bought the Baby Einstein Videos and she loved to watch them over and

over. I also played classical music for her - - Mozart. There have been

many studies proving that for some reason Mozart's music helps to connect

the neurotransmitters in the brain. With the music therapy she started

talking.

I took her out of her extra speech and OT programs, and did the music

therapy with her at home, which mainly just consisted of playing it. It

always calmed her down very dramatically, so we did learning games while

listening to Mozart and she was able to learn. She also was a lot less

stressed from not being brought place to place for so many therapy sessions.

After doing these things, I took her to her followup neurology appointment

and the neurologist said he had never seen a kid make such dramatic

progress. He asked what we were doing, but I didn’t tell him, because I

thought he would think I was crazy to do energy healing and music therapy!

So, basically, I did things that would help her be calm and then used the,

" calm time, " to do things with her. I bought a big poster with kids making

different facial expressions cut them out and told her what they meant ..

this kid is sad…this kid is confused…this kids is mad, etc.

With the potty training I just took all the pull-ups and diapers and threw

them out! I put her on the potty and sang a potty song and let her put

stickers on a board every time she went. After a few wet days, she went on

the potty and that was that. Also, her little brother was potty training

too, so I think him going on the potty and having no more diapers helped her

along.

So, I feel that doing the energy healing and music therapy helped to calm

her and somehow broke down the, " wall, " she had, so she was able to learn.

Since that time, she has made more and more and more progress. She is in

first grade now and spends half days in the typical classroom. She does not

even have an aide with her now and sits nicely in the typical classroom and

does her work. She plays with the other girls and makes friends with them.

Yes, she still has times when she gets anxiety and repeats the same sentence

25 times. She still has auditory sensitivities and sometimes she just

screams out. When she gets like this I let her go to her room and play with

her little pet shop toys for as long as she needs to and she calms down and

comes out when she is ready. If we are out somewhere and something triggers

her anxiety, we go home!

I think the most important thing is to get the anxiety under control. If

you think about it…when you are feeling very stressed out it is hard to

focus on anything except the anxiety. Well, for us this worked. Yeah,

people thought I was doing the wrong thing by pulling her out of therapy and

doing my own stuff with her, but it worked for her. So, if I have any

advice to give it would be -- find something that calms your child and

listen to your instincts with them. Don't push them to learn -- that just

causes more anxiety and less learning.

, Thank you for your story. This will help so many here on this board. I am

going to download some Mozart on 's IPOD. She knows about Mozart from

Disney movies but I forgot about classical when we downloaded a bunch of songs.

What made you want to find a kinetic energy therapist? Where did you find one?

This is fascinating. I wonder why your daughter is still struggling with

anxiety. Have you figured this one out and why the turkey isn't working any more

(if that is the reason)?

Thank you for all of your information. That is wonderful to hear about

the music and baby Einstein movies...I was just about to give mine away and now

I will keep them and use them with Destiney...she does love music! I feel the

same way as you do in giving her time to calm down. I am glad that you said to

follow my instincts and let her do what calms her and not to push her...it just

makes sense doesnt it?! I have never heard of the energy therapy though...what

sort of " energy things " did he do to her..if you dont mind me asking...that

seems interesting. Destiney does always get stressed out every time we have to

go out somewhere and it usually ends up with us having to leave which then leads

my other children to being upset and its just so hard....what else can I do

though? The older girls do understand, but that doesnt really help them when

they really wanted to go to the movies or go to the mall. And who has the money

to always be paying someone so you can go do things with your other children.

Thats a whole other talk though! lol

Thanks again

Don't push them to learn -- that just

causes more anxiety and less learning.

major precurser to her being able to say words? Can she point to anything? Does

she identify anything that she wants by pointing or picking up a picture? I am

only a mom with 12 almost 13 years experience of living with autism. I am not a

" trained professional " . I do have 4 other children (older).

I want to help you as much as I can. There are others on this list that will

help, I am sure of that. I know that you are not alone. I can relate totally to

you about the not having the help and respite. I have to depend on the 3 other

children in the home and my husband for help. I do have that much but other than

that it is none. My family (siblings/parents) doesn't have a clue how to help or

even the faith to offer. Same with my husbands family. Our neighbors are the

same. Unless it is an emergency, I do not ask anyone for anything. Maybe I have

gotten hardened in the " asking " department.

P.S. I too believe that sees angels & others in the spirit realm. She

knows things before we do. Some kind of esp or spiritual awareness that is

amazing.

Shanna, wow...that does give me hope for Destiney! She does walk..she

she is as much frustrated...if not more...with me trying to potty train her.

What did you have your daughter do if she pooped/peed on herself? Destiney

really does not take part in her personal care...I try to have her help but she

kind of just stands there like " you want me to do what?! " ...I dont know if she

gets what I am asking her and just refuses or if she really just doesnt

understand. Her right side is affected by the cerebral palsey and is alot

weaker. She has some control over her right hand and leg...but not alot. So that

plays a big role in teaching her how to dress and undress herself as

well...which she really doesnt do either. It is just so hard to tell what she is

picking up on and what she isnt. Sometimes I find out from her teacher

that she has learned to do something and I was still doing it for her...the

little stinker! lol But for the most part she is fully dependent on

me...unfortunately. I love her to pieces...I just really hope and pray that one

day her autism would be lifted from her...it would be a welcomed miracle.

Well, I was just looking through the phone book for Homeopath doctors and

just came across the energy healer. I did not know what he did and was

curious so I called him, and told him a little bit about Ally and he said to

bring her in and that the first consult and treatment was free. I felt like

we had nothing to lose by trying new things and it was free so what the

heck.

With the turkey, it has some calming thing in it, I forget what it is

called...ya know when you eat turkey you get tired...it calms you.. It

still does help calm Ally. She still has anxiety because she still has her

sensitivities to sounds, bright lights, and crowds of people make her really

nervous.

I forgot one other thing; she used to grind her teeth day and night and I

took her to the pedatric dentist and she ended up having 5 of her molars

with little cracks in them and he put her to sleep and crowned those teeth.

The same day we got home from the dentist she ate and ate and ate and ate.

I had not known that she was avoiding a lot of foods because it was hurting

her teeth! So, I think after that she was getting more vitamins from eating

more and that also helped her.

The classical music for Ally is amazing! It instantly calms her.

I think so many people are doing what I was doing and pushing therapy, but

honestly has traditional therapy helped your kids? For Ally, it just was

not working, and on top of that it would take her hours to calm herself

after each therapy session. It just caused her so much stress.

So, try new things even if they sound weird...(as long as they are safe),

pay attention to what calms your child and use that time for learning

time....pay attention to what causes your child anxiety and try your best to

avoid those things... As moms, we know our kids better than anyone

else...We have to listen to what our gut says to do for them. If I would

have listened to the doctors and therapists and kept pushing Ally and

bringing her all over town for therapy...and not tried other things...I

really do not think she would be were she is at today.

The energy healer took her hands and asked her questions and then he knew

the answers, by things she did, I guess,?. Then, he took the palm of his

hand and push it against the middle of her forehead and said that helped her

brain pick a dominant side... I found out later that police officers do this

also when a criminal is being crazy...to calm them down..?... I never

really looked into it to much... I just knew that for some weird reason it

worked for her.

Honestly, I stayed home a lot when Ally was younger, because going out

caused her so much stress. I have two other children also, and I guess we

all made that sacrafice for her, until she was able to handle doing more

things outside of the house. I am also a single mom, so of course I had to

do things like go to the grocery store, wal-mart, etc. I would have her dad

come over when she was sleeping and that is when I would do the shopping and

other things I had to get done. If there were things I HAD to do during the

day we would of course had to do them.

Shanna, as far as behavioral modifications go...no they never did any tests.

Actually Destineys best doctor the one I used out of Loyola since she was six

months old, dropped her a few years back because she was called into the courts

when we were going through terminating the parents rights. I was so very upset

because she helped me out so much. Her therapists and I always use positive

reinforcement with her to help her to do things. Or we use alot of repitition

and picture schedules to ease transitions and to let her see what she is suppose

to do.

I do think it is wonderful that she does make some sounds...I hope that in time

she will say something or even one word again. She does not point to

anything...but she does use her pecs book. She is able to pick up the picture

" I want " and then a picture of a food or maybe Blues Clues (she loves Blue) or

a sippy cup. I think this is so marvelous considering she would not a few years

ago. But there is just so much more that she wants to say and of course she

cant....I have about thirty or so pictures in her book but she will only focus

on and chose about three of them.

Yes I hear you on the help issue. My family is wonderful, but in this

department they just dont help much. I dont know why and have never asked. I

have been alone for almost six years now and I can count on one hand how many

times I have been offered any help. I have also been " hardened " to asking. I

feel like if they want to help they will offer...I mean how could you NOT know

that I need help or a break even once a month? I have four children ages 15,

12, 10, and 4...its so not easy! lol Only, like yourself, in an emergency

situation I will help. I have to say that I have always asked my older sister,

when she was going through a rough patch with her husband, if I could help her

out by watching her kids...and I have and still do...I dont know what the

problem is.

As a mother...we are trained professionals!...I appreciate all the advice and

help that is offered. What by the way, exactly is behavioral modification? I

have heard the term before but never asked about it.

Yes this is true! I have always had a connection with Destiney...without any

words I knew what she was feeling. It is funny but even her birthmom told me

this one day...she said to me " you always seem to know what she wants or is

feeling...I am glad she is with you, you have a connection. " It has always been

that way. It is a spiritual level.

Wow...that is so very different...I wonder what the forehead thing is? I

should look into this.

I do stay home alot...but I just feel so bad for my other children...but theres

nothing I can do right now. I wonder often if my children resent her to some

point...they wont voice exactly how they feel. I know when we are out and

Destiney has a fit and throws herself to the floor and screams and kicks...I

know her siblings are embarrassed and my youngest is confused on why she does

this! lol But I just do the best I can and I try to bring along things that

Dessy loves...such as chocolate and Blues Clues toys.
