Oh Jaye, you are KIDDING!!! Bag balm is very healing for nasty cracked old adult feet. My Aunt Betsy used it on her face and she had lovely skin. But on a baby's butt? No way.... Love to see the appropriate documentation on that one!

Bag balm in the NICU??

Hi All,

You gotta tell me if I am nuts or they are. I just talked to a mom with a baby (born 7-5 at 34.5 wks gest) in NICU – he has anal fissures. He has had streaking of blood in his stools as a result of the fissures. He is ONLY breastmilk fed – sometimes at breast, sometimes on bottle. To help the fissures the NICU is putting Bag Balm (yes, Bag Balm in the square green tin can – the stuff they use on cow udders…) on his bottom. I was FLOORED.

Am I nuts in thinking this is totally inappropriate or not? Bag Balm is for cow udders…not premie baby rectums. I told mom that I was surprised and that I did not agree with such use and why. I also told her I would ask my colleagues to make sure I am not out of line…

Thoughts?

Gosh, might as well just put some lansinoh on his butt! - at least there would

be carcinogenic chemicals (in bag balm)

Seriously though - it doesn't shock me since evidence based medicine doesn't

seem to find its way into the hospital very often, but if I was in your

position jaye - I would have told her to definitely question their treatment

plan.

1st step should not be to put bag balm, but to find the Cause - with a capital C

(which I'm thinking is a combination of his prematurity and a trigger of some

sort - what type of diapers are they using? hopefully either 100% cotton or

nature babycare or some other non-toxic chemical free diaper)

2nd step would be to put something non carcinogenic on the little babe's bottom

until the cause is found and addressed.

good luck
