, do you have to order those brands from somewhere or are they available in stores that sell herbs? Beebe, M.Ed., IBCLC Lactation Consultant/Postpartum Doula www.second9months.comBreastfeeding Between the Lines: http://second9months.wordpress.com/--- Subject: Re: ShatavariTo:

Micky,Many mothers I work with coping with supply issues choose to use shatavari. I recommend Avesta brand capsules and/or bulk shatavari powder through Mountain Rose Herbs. I am very picky about my herbs and the sources of them and I trust these two resources. You asked about results…I am a huge fan of shatavari and see it as an important part of certain care plans. However, like any herbs or supplement, you have to know what you are addressing and what results you are expecting. On one level shatavari works similarly to Reglan and domperidone in that it speeds stomach emptying but unlike

pharmaceuticals, it goes beyond that. It helps heal the gut, promotes healthy excretions (think milk production and sicn Bf can sometimes cause vaginal dryness it helps in that dept too), supports the immune system, reduces stress, etc. Many mothers can use that type of support I believe.I have had one mother complain of increase digestive upset which improved once she stopped taking the shatavari but she was extremely sensitive to herbs with a high saponin level anyhow so that made sense. No other mothers I have worked with have reported any discomfort when they have chosen to use shatavari. One case of a mother using shatavari before she and I met was interesting. When she said she was taking shatavari, I asked to see

her bottle of it and low and behold the inner contents of the capsule did NOT look at all like shatavari, more like ground up twigs. So there are certainly junk products on the market that I’d steer clear of. Cole

Dandelion Botanicals in Ballard is a great company, great ethics, great quality herbs...

They sell organic Shatavari in bulk (powder, chop and root) as well as Banyan brand capsules.

thank you . I refer people to dandelion a lot, but it's out of the way for many clients. is the dosage on the container correct for breastfeeding moms? I'm sorry, I may have missed it (so many wonderful emails) but do you use just the recommended dosage as per the tincture/tea/powder etc?  I've never bough shatavari from Mountain Rose, but will give a shout out of support to their quality.  I use them for all my herbal needs when I can't get something locally.  Love their ethics, service and quality.

, A few local stores in my area carry the Avesta brand but honestly, I just order online for both Avesta and Mountain Rose Herbs. I try to keep some on hand at all times as well.

Vicki – You asked about the powder form. It is my understanding that Shatavari is traditionally taken in the powder form in most Ayurvedic preparations. It is usually stirred into warm milk and sweetened. I have a few mothers that really like to take it this way and enjoy the ritual of slowing down enough to prepare the beverage. A few others [refer to mix into a smoothie (I encourage moms to do nutrient dense super-smoothies and supplements can easily be added). Most moms though find capsules easiest. I have also seen shatavari tinctured.

 Hope that helps.
