My 6yo PDD-NOS son is in 1st grade in CyFair ISD and

all the elementary schools have an open concept...no

walls or doors. There are a few classrooms per grade

level that do actually have traditional walls and

doors and I'm begging the principal to put him into

one of those for next year (aren't any for his current

grade). The noise is a real sensory distraction for

him. Has anyone else in this or similar ISD come up

against this and what were your results? Also, any

ideas on how to convince them would be appreciated.

Jackie

OMG!!! I thought that idea of open concept learning was banished in the

1970's as an obviously failed attempt at a new and different educational

idea!!! I had no idea that any open concept schools still existed past about

1978!. I went to elementary school in Arlington in the late 60's and early

70's in a school that was TOTALLY open concept (the only closed rooms on the

entire campus were the bathrooms!!!). What a huge failure! I have no

disability (well, some of you may argue that! ha) and I was lucky to pass

elementary school! In middle school, I had to RELEARN most of the things I

should have learned in the 3rd through 6th grades because I couldn't master

anything because I could not concentrate to learn! Open concept is AWFUL in

my experience...none of the students can concentrate and learning is greatly

diminished for ALL the students...I can hardly imagine how totally

impossible it would be for a child on the spectrum.

At the elementary school I attended, pretty quickly after I left, they

realized that the " open concept " was a very failed experiment and did

extensive renovations to the fairly new building and put walls up for all

the classrooms. I am really shocked that it has made it's way back. I

thought that idea was dead and buried.
