Judy,

I would watch for any symptoms like a hawk. Kids who have PANDAS can become

" canaries in the coal mine " and react just from exposure to strep, without

actually being infected (there are several stages to infection - exposure,

adherence and full blown infection). Many schools have a " peanut free " lunch

table because a kid who's allergic can have an anaphylactic reaction just from

sitting at a table where someone else ate a peanut butter sandwich - same with a

PANDAS kid who sits next to a classmate (or sibling or parent) with strep.

You can read an immunologist's write up on this PANDAS reaction at

www.pandasresourcenetwork.org - a new website that came out today.

If you see any symptoms, the antibiotics alone may not be sufficient, since your

son could possibly be reacting without actually having a strep infection

himself. In this case, a course of prednisone can help calm things back down.

But you may want to consult with Dr K on this. I seem to recall your son may

also have Lyme and I don't know what impact prednisone could have in this case.

Prednisone suppresses an over-excited immune response, but Lyme is an infection,

so treatment would be complicated by the two illnesses together.

Hope you see nothing!

Nothing more to add, just that I know how you feel. Anytime some one mentions

strep, my heart is in my chest. Most of the time is ok for us - but I so feel

for you. We call it PPPD. Pandas Parent Panic Disorder. How is he doing

overall? Best wishes - in NC

Hi ,

I just don't know what I'd do if he got strep again. He is actually on three

antibiotics now, and two meds for his ocd and tics. How much more can he take???

PPPD? I can agree with that!!(lol)

Wow, Judy, is he tolerating 3 antibiotics okay? Poor kid. They can have some

nasty side effects too.

Hi BJ,

Thanks for your support!

I haven't started him on the third one yet. I have the script but want to

research it a little further before we start. I want to make sure it won't react

with his psych meds too.(sigh!!)
