Speaking as a true Trekkie, I never thought of Sci-fi as a " guy " thing. <smile>

I've been a fan since I was a young child in the 60's. Try any of the Star Trek

series...it's more child-friendly than BattleStar Galactica and I always thought

that the moral lessons were a great plus for the shows.

Sci-fi easily branches to fantasy/fairy tales...most kids liked the Lord of

the Rings movies but some parts may be a little too scary for small children.

Another movie I'd recommend is The Dark Crystal.

You'd be amazed at the people who really like sci-fi!

I think anyone who can read scifi is very impressive. I attempted to

read a sequel to epi 6 of Star Wars, was written by someone other than

Lucas. The book was so filled with abstract words I couldn't keep it

straight. I don't read Harry Potter for several reasons, one of which

is that all the unusual words get me so confused I can't enjoy it.

I guess video is a little different in that you have the visual aid to

help comprehend the words.

Debi,

I thought I was the only one who didn't enjoy Harry Potter!! I started the

first book about three times. My kids loved them but I couldn't keep the odd

words straight. I am a very black and white thinker and too much of the book

was weird. I can follow the movies but don't really enjoy them either.

I do not know what you consider " guys shows " for I do not understand

sterotypes. Below is a list of my favorite TV shows:

1) Numb3rs (CBS on Friday nights)

2) Mythbusters

3) NOVA

4) Monk

5) The Nanny (with Fran Drescher...I like the butler)

6) Friends

7) Pretty much anything on the History channel

I can't stand talk shows or night time shows with the exception of an

occational Ellen. I despise Sex in the City, Desperate Housewives or

any reality TV show. I am totally lost with American Idol. Simon is

mean and it is torture as a musician to listen to people sing out of

tune.

I usually don't like SciFi because it scares me.

I like Mythbusters except they make these gross leaps. Like the one

with, I believe was if cell phones caused a fire. If I'm remembering

that one correctly they didn't get a fire, so they said cell phones

cannot ever cause a fire at a gas pump. That wasn't an accurate

statement, what they found was that in their testing it didn't cause,

not that it *never* could cause it. (Not that I'm concerned about cell

phones, just the example.)Other than that, they are quite

entertaining. Did you see the one when they tested how many balloons

it would take to carry a small child into the air? That looked like

fun for that little girl.

I'm sort of the opposite with my viewing, I love some news shows. I

also love Biggest Loser, I think it's the best reality show because

it's about helping people be healthy. Very inspiring for this fat

girl. I'm with you though, most of the other reality shows are mean.

I used to like ER but it's getting more about a political statement

each week than just good drama. I also love Discovery Health, but they

replay too many of the same shows over and over.

I love Mythbusters and Monk! I like Psych too, but

Monk just reminds me sooo much of sooo many of my

spectrum friends, in the " mannerisms " and stuff.

I also like House (medical stuff really gets me going,

surprise anyone? I like to outguess the doctors on

Mystery Diagnosis too. And I like Dr G, about a

coroner, but I have a high grossness tolerance) and

Bones, about a forensic anthropologist, and she and

HER whole staff remind me of SPECIFIC friends. Bones

gets scarier than House.

My scifi, I prefer reading, but I like reading OR

watching Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. And I

like reading medical journals *giggle* and textbooks

*giggles harder*. I'm such a geek, I wish we had a med

school out here, Id go for neuropharmacology and

specialize in autistic spectrum so that kids wouldnt

get poisoned with overly high starting doses, and

would get the appropriate testing before starting and

stuff...theres enough auties out here to support

that...

Kassiane

soooo geeky, even in her TV and reading

I just have to put my 2 cents in here! lol... I do watch some Mybusting

stuff with my husband & kids, but the one medical show that gets our

family is " HOUSE " ! The doctor is very " Aspergers " like in his behavior.

They even had a show last season that eluded to this. They have touched

on a lot of subject matter, even " Autism " . It is something we never

miss. You will probably hate Greg House (played by Hugh Laurey) but you

will love how they try to figure out problems in diagnosis/prognosis on

the show.

Oh, and my son is a Huge Sci-fi fan. He is 16.

I liked the old tv series, and have the book (all 5 of the trilogy).

The new film was funny, especially the scene with all knitted figures

(one of my special interests, too) but the tv series was way better.

We have it on video tape, and it has been viewed so often, the tape is

all wonky already.

Still a lot of fun to pop it in and watch it for a whole

afternoon.Slarty bartfass is hilarious, I use his 'just hte normal

paranoya' reference a lot in conversation.

We (bf and me) have a blast with referencing movie dialogue to our

surrounding, seems to be some echolalic trait that is fun to keep, it

does not hurt and for others it is fun to guess, which movie it is

from, and if they dont get to it, telling them.

I forgot about Monk and House, I love those, too, and as Kassianne

wrote, I always try to guess the ailment before house gets to his

diagnosis, The girl with cushings, I had it after the first 7 minutes

of the film, and impressed bf with it, the later cases, we are in

season 2 here in germany, and after Season 2, Episode 9: Deception

they show reruns now, and I am not happy about this.

I hope they get done synchronizing the missing episodes soon (my guess

why they did not go on in season 2), and I can get new cases.
