Hi Beverly, Sam hasn’t had many sleep issues besides a restlessness or pain issues at times.  For the restlessness I have used melatonin but he has not required it since he has been on his new vitamin protocol. It's really rare for 5-HTP to cause seizures. I think the old study you're

referring to was an infant that had a seizure on the 5-HTP. I often recommend

testing serotonin levels to my patients with DS before starting any supplement

that will alter neurotransmitter levels. It's a urine test and only costs $47

to test one neurotransmitter.

Serotonin is important for moderating appetite, mood and sleep, among others.

Low serotonin can lead to sleep problems, behavior problems and carbohydrate

cravings. It's also the precursor to melatonin, which is how it helps with

sleep.

It's definitely a helpful supplement for those with DS.

With Sam being on as many supplements as he is it is hard to say what is doing what at this point.  My main concern was growing bone, second concern immune system issues but I have to say with his new protocol we have seen better speech, less repetition, less frustration in listening and working on school work.  We are also meeting our original goals of bone growth and better IG numbers.  It’s often hard to tell with Sam because changes in behavior could be supplement, food related, yeast picking up or dying out, or pain related.  Sam’s cognition is not only affected by Down syndrome, he also has a brain injury so I’m never sure if his cognition is more affected by the brain injury or by the oxidative stress.  He’s a puzzle but I do feel like we are moving in the right direction.
