Fundraiser Seminar

Monday, September 18, 2006

6:30pm-8:30pm

Location to be Announced!

ABOUT OUR GUEST SPEAKER:

Sondra , from Columbus, Ohio, is a wife, mother, advocate,

author, poet, and presenter, who works as a classroom aide to a

child with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Autism is a part of

who Sondra is, but it does not define her. Those who look for the

true " definition " of Sondra find that she is an incredible woman,

with a gentle character, a strong determination to succeed, a kind

and generous heart, a creative mind, a resilient faith, and an

enviable ability to express herself through beautiful poetry, which

she terms her " dancing words. "

This is a powerful and insightful look at life from the perspective

of Sondra , an adult with high-functioning autism. Her

articles and poetry beautifully illustrate the unique strengths and

challenges that she experiences. Topics covered include general

information about what it is like to have autism, as well as

Sondra's perspectives on her 18-year marriage and her four children

(who have all been diagnosed with ASD), her childhood memories, the

therapy that has allowed her to discover and value her real self,

and her faith. This book is an excellent resource for parents,

grandparents, professionals, and individuals with ASD!

A Note from Angel about Sondra

A year ago Sondra came to speak to our community about living her

life with Autism and being the mother of 4 children who are also on

the spectrum. She shared her heart from a side that many of us long

to understand…and that is how our children live, how they experience

life, what will happen, is there hope.

Her life story is incredible, moving, emotional, filled with

laughter and tears. There were so many with questions that we had

to stop after a period of time so Sondra could get back to

Columbus.

This incredible woman, who I am privileged to call friend, traveled

here to speak a year ago, and she was sick. She told me as we sat

eating, " I was really sick, but I knew I could not let my friend,

Angel down. " She wanted to come and share her story…our children's

story.

Sondra contacted me in April with an incredible proposal. She had

been reading about our group and our goals to reach our community

and beyond, and our need to raise funds. She told me she had an

idea, but wanted to check some things out first. A day later she

asked if she could return to speak to our community, our parents,

grandparents, siblings, professionals and other individuals who live

with ASD and use it as a fund raiser for OASIS. Her request was

this, " I want all the monies to go to OASIS, just give me some gas

money. "

So, we have invited Sondra to come back and share her story and give

you the insight into the world our children walk in.

Come and hear her story, gain hope!

If you did not get the chance to hear her last year, this is your

opportunity. Invite your family, friends, therapists…anyone who has

contact with your child.

If you want to learn more about Sondra, go to: www.graycenter.org

Sondra's book & DVD will be on sale during this seminar.
