Guest guest
If her child's OCD just appeared one day, there's a chance it's PANDAS. PANDAS is caused by strep antibodies attacking the brain and the treatment it high doses of antibiotics for awhile. Here is a good link to learn about it. It's footage of Dr. Swedo, the leading expert in PANDAS research. You will need to have Quicktime installed to watch it and it takes about 40 minutes. WELL worth the viewing for any mom of an OCD kiddo. http://media.mindinstitute.org/video/toxconf/mov/swedo_2006_toxconf_hi.mov I emailed Dr. Swedo and she said they are treating PANDAS with Penicillin or Keflex for those allergic to penicillin. It's not easy to find a doctor who knows how to treat PANDAS so Beth Mahoney is preparing a list at www.savingsammy.net. of doctors who know how. Please send your friend there to look over the footage too. It might be of interest to her. Not many doctors are familiar and most hesitate to give antibiotics for such a long period of time. Funny thought, they treat rheumatic fever exactly that way, long term antibiotics, so it stops attacking the heart. Beth's son was treated with the antibiotic Augmentin for 1 year at 2000 mg and then 2 years at 1000 mg but he is symptom free now. The best place to read about PANDAS is at www.latitudes.org Click on forums and choose either OCD or Pandas. Great Reading from Mom's I have started my 2 OCD babes on Keflex yesterday. I'm convinced it's PANDAS. Wish us luck!I had received Keflex from another doctor before but the dosing was wrong. Not enough for long enough so here we go. I'm optimistic. > > Hi all > I don't post a lot-I mainly just lurk. But recently I have been going back and forth off of the group with someone who is new to OCD. > It isn't in the family-the kid just showed up with it one day. > The person I am emailing back and forth with is just being to deal withit and doesn't see that things can and will get better. The fact that we all post that there are real ups and downs with OCD is hard because like all of us, this parent just wants it gone. Don't we all wish we had a magic wand or magic supplement to make it all go away? > > I was thinking that maybe it would be helpful for this parent and others to hear some sucess stories-that OCD is not the end of the world, with work and meds it can be on the back burner. Also, this parent is going through the stages of grief like all of us did and maye it would help to share how we worked through it. > Just an idea-I hope some of you see the value in it. > I know whhen I was a newbie " sucess " stories helped and it helped to share them with my child > Ydati >
Guest guest
Hi - our daughter's OCD also " appeared out of the blue " , literally - I can remember the day both times this happened. She has done extremely well with ERP (Exposure & Ritual Prevention) therapy, but along the way, we learned that she has PANDAS. We still use ERP therapy, but we also treat it with anti-biotics, and very rarely, steriods. She may want to check out a PANDAS diagnosis - there are a lot of posts about this lately, but let us know if you need more info. Our dd8, went from being nearly crippled from severe OCD (spitting 100's of times a day, washing 50+ x a day, constant fear of throwing up, unable to wear most clothes, play with certain toys etc) to back to being a happy, smart, wild little girl. For us, it really helped to read a ton, research as much as possible, and to talk about it with everyone we could. Meeting other parents (and kids!) was very theraputic for our family. Tell them we are all rooting for their daughter! > > Hi all > I don't post a lot-I mainly just lurk.
