Guest guest
I know there are some people from Indiana here, so I wanted to pass on some promising news. House Education Panel OKs VouchersReported by: WoodruffWednesday, February 16 2011 Indiana's House Education Committee has voted to support school vouchers. The committee passed the bill, 8 to 5, late Wednesday afternoon. It now moves to the full House, and its chances of becoming law are better than ever. School vouchers would give parents public money to send their kids to private schools based on their household income. Analysts say for every 1,000 students, the program would take about $5.5 million away from public schools. But the amount that parents would receive to pay for private schools is less than that ($3.7 million), so the state could actually save money ($1.8 million). There are many arguments for and against vouchers. Krista Stockman, spokeswoman for Fort Wayne Community Schools, says vouchers will hurt public schools. “Private schools are not held to the same level of accountability that public schools are,” said Stockman. “Private schools don't have to admit all students as public schools do. And so, by taking money away from public schools, you are hurting public schools.” Meantime, Tony , state superintendent of education, praised the committee's decision. said vouchers allow parents to “make educational decisions that best suit the needs of their children.” added that vouchers also “provide hope for families and children who previously may have had very little.” But a FOX Fort Wayne Facebook fan takes another side: forget vouchers, how about tax credits? They would “help homeschool and private school families and it keeps govt. money and govt regulations out of private schools,” writes Audrey -Queckboerner. Governor Mitch s supports vouchers. And with a Republican House and Senate, political experts say the chance of passing vouchers has never been better. Head to our www.Facebook.com/FoxFortWayne and let us know what you think.
