On the issue of food. You can save a bundle of $$ by NOT clipping coupons

and jsut shopping around the edges. Buy store brands. Preparing food from

scratch takes a little longer, but one can prepare several meals at a time

and then freeze so that you have frozen dinners- where you control the

ingredients.

Look on line for coupons to eat out - Cat D's has them all the time - I bet

others do as well.

I've had to stop taking my antidepressants and high blood pressure meds.

Can't afford them or the follow up doctor visit copays. I'm taking my kids

off their meds because I can't afford them and I can't afford driving 2

hours each way to the developmental pediatrician ($40 in gas) plus the $40

copay every 3 months because he won't refill a prescription without an exam.

So no more meds for them. I dropped Kayla's hippotherapy and Laurie's

swimming lessons (and probably her gymnastics, too) and will not be signing

her up for Girl Scouts next school year.

We don't do fast food. My husband and I don't go on date nights (or even

date lunches!). We have never been on vacation as a family. We've seen 1

movie in a theater in five years. I splurged for Kayla's birthday and spent

$20 for the bouncy house place. Looks like we won't be going on many outings

this summer unless they are funded by the kids' grandparents or the local

community youth groups. I'm going to miss taking the kids for ice cream in

the summer, but wow, 1 lousy scoop of ice cream is like $2.50 now!

My husband's business sells firefighting chemicals to municipalities. Of

course, with the economy in the dumps, municipalities have no money. You'd

think that it would be a recession proof business, but I guess fire fighters

are just letting fires burn out now instead of using the firefighting foam

to contain them or something. My husband wanted me to find a part time job

but ONLY from 9 - 2 when the kids are in school and no nights or weekends. I

just laughed at him and said that would be impossible with so many people

looking for work and willing to work any days at any hours.

I don't really know how much more to cut, since the meds were pretty much

the last straw.

Hi Ecki,

I don't know where you live but I know here (Michigan) Sam's Club and Meijers

offer certain medication for a nominal fee (sorry don't remember exact amount

something like $5). Please check with both of them to see if it is the ones you

need.

Ecki, I know how you feel. Last year a week apart my husband and I lost our

jobs. He finally found work but since I have to work while is in school I

have had no luck. My profession was Account Exec for a mortgage company. The day

care could no longer provide services so I basically had to find a new line of

work. I worked as a customer service professional from 9-2 Mon-Fri for 4 yrs and

then the company went out of bus. because right after 9-11 the bus. went down.

The next job I had paid really poorly and the work was physically demanding.

After working at Garden Ridge for 3 1/2 yrs In March of 2009 they told all the

employees that we were all losing our jobs. Now if we wanted to reapply we could

but the only way we would get hired back was to be available to work any time of

the day or night and Mon.-Sun. Of course the company new I was hired to work

Mon.-Fri. 9-2 because of my special needs child but do you think that mattered

to them? No it was all about Garden Ridge. They had done the same thing with

employees at a different Garden Ridge right before Christmas in 2008. Everyone

lost their jobs. It is all about the mighty dollar and no one cares about the

employees anymore. Everything is this world keeps going up

groceries, gas, lights, phone service and the salaries keep going down down down.

People are starting to move in with families and having like 2-3 generation of

families living together to stay afloat. Dr. are also feeling the pinch with

insurance companies dictating write offs. I know a Dr. that had to give up his

practices and go to work for a hospital. My daughter is going to college next

year and I have been on her like flies on shit to apply apply apply for

scholarships, grants, etc. If we do not mostly get it paid for she won't be able

to go. I apply for grants, and scholarships all the time to get money to pay for

's therapies, or I would not be able to afford them. Cyndi B

The special internist who moved to our little town was in a practice which

agreed to be bought by our 48 bed hospital. Last week she was told to start

seeing 25 patients a day. She quit. As of June first we will not have the

specialized doc my dh needs without traveling 50 miles. we are waiting to

see what this doc is going to do. Would love for her to open her own

practice. We sure need her (we only have one other internist in this town

and she has been full for 4 years. )

Ecki,

Sorry things are so rough. Have you looked at working at home online?

There are a few actual legitimate companies that you can work from home

using your phone and the internet. You can work whatever hours you want.

Yes, it is basically minimum wage but that adds up quick when you aren't

used to making anything. They are mainly customer service type jobs, like

mail order catalogs or some receptionist jobs too.

Hang in there :-)

Oh, and did you know you can claim any medical miles on your taxes? We have

been getting around $800 back a year for the last two years from driving

all around.

Spousal unit works from home (for a startup), I am not employed & our income

dropped waaaay over 50% since this time last year as a result of employment

change preceded by the sale of startup company. Which was preceded by the sale

of a startup company-which was preceded by working to build a startup company

for no income-which was preceded by a variety of " starting over " jobs (due to

death, birth,divorce, job loss).....

Out of our 12 years together, we had almost a whole 9 months of feeling " rich " .

The kind of rich that meant paying bills on time or gingerly splurging on cable

or fixing up yard/house or buying some " toys " ....

Quite an awakening when one is approaching their 50's. For me especially- an

adjustment from one type of frugal to another. I knew from my prior life how to

be frugal in order to pay for things like college or study in China or other

happenings or " name brand " whatever for my now adult sons.

Like I said, for me, it was an awakening & an adjustment to shift that " frugal "

to a life necessities frugal.

Fortunately, I believe in magic. :)

Recent example: My grandchildren are currently ages 2,6,9 & my son DJ is 14 (15

on May 30th). Our county schools are currently on " spring break " . As I

mentioned, we are currently operating on 50-60% less income. I wanted very badly

to " do " some things for/with the kiddos. The grandgirls ages 6 & 9 were

spending a couple of days with us. Little dude age 2 not ready yet-seperation

anxiety..

I used magical thinking in preplanning activities geared for the girls & DJ.

With the cooperation of the weather; our house, our deck & our yard became

enchanted. We unearthed the seldom used giant tent house thing & set it up on

the deck. In one room I put a child size cardtable & chairs & the other room

mats & pillows.

I gathered paints & glitter glue & markers, tiny flower pots & the reams of

moving paper I had stashed. I re-filled the sandbox & put a table near it. I

gathered flashlights, battery operated candles, plastic Margarita glasses & our

smores maker.

The only thing I bought was 3 cans of glo in the dark silly string, stuff to

make smores & strawberries.

Their time was filled with " stuff " to do in daylight & darkness. They were

asked ahead of time what their fave foods were & each kiddo got a day of just

" their " food choices. Which I fancied up by serving in things like the

margarita glasses with an orange twist or skewered on bamboo or toothpicks or

simply nestled in powdered sugar on a tray (strawberries)

They had breakfast in the tent house, smores by candlelight at the deck table &

creamed me royally with silly string that actually did glow in the dark.

They played, they read, they created reams of art & were totally filthy by the

end of their visit. DJ moved half his belongings into the tent house lol.

And the girls cried when they had to leave.

I am exhausted but happy that I believe in magic. And just perhaps 3 kiddos do

as well. And maybe will have memories that will last a bit longer than say

Chuckee Cheese. I hope.

I do similar re DJ's birthday now. It is officially named (by him) " The Best

Day Ever " . I basically transform our deck, house and/or yard into a theme that

is totally geared to kiddo fun. The first year it was a Beach & last year it

was Zelda-Fairies-Pirates theme. This year it will be carnival/fair/I don't

know what to call it yet theme. One can get ALOT of milage out of playsand,

water, some props, some water toys, some balloons, some fabric or sheets, etc....

The point is, there IS MAGIC in ordinary things lying about the house that can

be transformed into some things very special. Or transforming ordinary

activities into magical happenings.

For little or no $$.

:)

Peace.

As usual Kris - you are a ********(those are sparkly stars)

I would like to remind people about www.ANGELFOODMINISTRIES.com. This has

grown enormously in the last year. Food is better, more special boxes

including allergen free boxes. ANYONE can join - no income restrictions.

The basic $30 box is worth $60. There are veggie boxes as well.

Check it out. In my area you no longer have to pay a month ahead but only 3

days ahead. See what is available in your neighborhood.

And if not that - there is SHARE - again no income restrictions. SHARE

usually asks for 2 hours volunteer time in exchange for a box. When we were

in an area that had SHARE, we did our share by driving non-drivers sto [ick

up food, or delivered food, or sometimes helped set up food.

Uase your store flyers. This morning I went to my neighborhood grocery and

paid $2.99 for 4 lbs of oranges. Then I went to Walmart and bought more at

$.25/each The $.25/each was the better buy - I got 10 for $2.50 - only got

8 smaller ones for $2.99

Also chix legs and thighs were $.80/lb at the neighborhood grocery Thighs

were $.59/lb at Wally's.

Pays to check - even with the gas.
