Since my immune system is so weak he told me not to get any vaccinations.

He said some use live viruses.

I was going to school full time but now I only go two hours a day. For my

senior year I am doind independant studies, but I will still be able to

graduate with my class.

I agree with Barbara about not touching people as much. I have an 8 year old

daughter, and when she first started going to school a few years ago, I would

get sick all the time from all the stuff she would bring home. I find that

if I remember to wash my hands often, I don't get colds as often. Something

that simple can really help, especially being in a school environment where

you are exposed to so much.

Your doctor told you correctly. Imuran and prednisone suppress the immune

system. By suppressing the immune system, it stops attacking the liver.

Unfortunately, they don't have medicines that are specific enough to just stop

the part of the immune system that is attacking the liver. So, our weakened

immune system is not able to fight off diseases as well as it would if we

weren't taking the medications.

Every year now I get the flu vaccines and I had pnuemonia and hepatitis

vaccininations also. don't know if the immune system is good for colds

anyway, but I don't touch people as much as I used to - shaking hands with

someone who has a cold is an easy way to get a cold. I stay away from little

children who are sick - I let someone else pick them up. It is probably

difficult for a teenager such as yourself to stay away from places where there

are germs. About all you can do is be aware of the potential problem and avoid

situations where you know someone is sick.

Geri,

My doctor said not to risk the vaccinations. My immune system has never

been that good. I just wonder how this is going to effect the rest of my

life and my plans for a career. I have always wanted to be a doctor but now

I don't think it would be a good idea to be around sick people all day. Now

I am dead set on becoming a pharmacist. I hope things get better.

One of the first things that was done after my positive diagnosis for AIH

was immunization against almost everything! But I don't know if any of

those immunizations included live viruses. I was a little rocky at the time

and didn't absorbe 75% of what they were telling me. However, except for a

chronic cough and congestion, I haven't been sick since those

immunizations. Some of the immunizations that I remember were against

pneumonia, polio and of course, flu.

Despite having a very suppressed immune system after more than a year on

immunosuppresants, I've only had one infection. I've posted a warning on

this subject before, but at risk of sounding like an alarmist, I'll mention

it again. A cat bite, even if the cat's tooth barely scratches the skin

surface, can be very, very dangerous. Cat bites can be dangerous for

anyone, but with a suppressed immune system, apparently they can be fatal.

I was even told at Scripps that I might be told that we would have to get

rid of our 3 cats or I'd not be eligible for transpant.

I didn't believe this could happen, especially since our very rowdy cat

Schuyler, who's been declawed, thinks that " fun " means biting. Sky nicked

me with a fang several times and I had no problem until last summer when he

barely broke the skin on my wrist. Within an hour there was a huge, red,

burning and aching welt rising up my arm. I felt it start the minute his

tooth broke the surface of my skin. Fortunately, I called a doctor

immediately and was given antibiotics right away. However, I was told that

I would have to be hospitalized if the infection didn't immediately

subside. After that I was seen daily until all trace of the infection was

gone (more than a week.) It wasn't a normal infection, either. No

draining, just a rock hard, deep red swelling.

No, we didn't get rid of the cats nor would I have considered it for a

minute, but I was told to think of a cat bite as injecting myself with

deadly poison. I'm very careful with Sky now and one of the two other cats

(he was 18) has since died. The other one nips at me now and then but her

bites don't cause this reaction. If Sky even slightly breaks the skin

surface I immediately run water over the spot to try to wash away all

traces of his saliva then rub Neosporin into it. It seems to work but I

hope he never really bites me instead of just playing with me. (He thinks

I'm another cat, I think.) The thing is, I love the cats. They're like

friends and they are young and want to play. For some reason, I'm their

designated playmate (or maybe their designated toy). If I ignore them,

they'll pounce me from behind, grabbing the back of one of my legs as I

walk away. Sky weighs 20 lbs., by the way, but Angie is just a little thing.

Take care,

Geri

I seem to be the opposite to you. Since being diagnosed with AIH I have had

no mundane diseases like the flue etc. It is really strange. I hadn't

realised this til a couple of months ago, but that is what is happening.

Keep well.

Boy, do I agree about getting sick! I am an elementary school teacher and it

has been miserable since I have been on the medication. Kids always have

something and their hygiene habits are not the best. I just can't turn them

away when they want to hold my hand or give me a hug. I keep hand sterilizer

on my desk and apply often. I try never to touch my face. Hope medical

science comes up with a better solution soon!

I've never worried much about immunizations because I was so rarely sick

before AIH. When everyone else got flu, I seldom did. Got it all out of

my system when I was a child and went through the whole measles, mumps,

etc. cycle.

The immunization routine is part of the pre-transplant program that Scripps

put me through and this was a four and a half day schedule of medical

testing and events that I think that they follow for all transplant

candidates. However, the immunizations were also before I'd been taking

Prednisone and Imuran for more than a couple of weeks so my immune system

wasn't yet suppressed like it would become later. I'm guessing that the

reason for this is because after being on immunosuppressants for awhile, we

have less ability to resist these diseases and they can pose a life

threatening danger.

In the long run, we each have to trust and follow the advice of our own

doctors (or find new doctors if we can't or won't) because they are our

lifeline. We have to assume that they are considering what is best for us,

so if your doctor rules out vaccinations for you, the reasons must be

valid. Many months ago I read some in-depth articles on treatment of AIH

patients and liver transplant candidates. It brought to my attention that

most Hepatologists follow a specific program but they're not all alike.

So, for example, Hepatologists in California might follow programs

established by one of the major transplant centers on the West Coast while

Hepatologists in the eastern US might follow a different program. Success

ratios from the different program vary. It's confusing for a group like

ours because we live all over the map.

Take care,

Geri

the being of my thyroid problem five and a half years ago. Before this I

get a cough assist and/or maybe have someone push on you diaphram when you

cough. cough assists are a freaking miracle.

Kendra it really sounds like you have the flu. Please call your dr to get

some flumadine (medication that helps kill the virus faster) ASAP as it only

works if you take it in the first couple of days. I don¹t have much typing

strength tonight but if you could have a respiratory therapist come to your

home to give you treatments (or teach someone else how to do it) that would

help a lot too.

This sounds like the flu. If you start the antiviral medication within 24

hours of the first symptoms it will reduce the severity and the length of

the sickness. I'd suggest you go to the doctor NOW so that you can get on it.

I'd second 's suggestion of a cough machine. Get a script written ASAP.

I was told by both MDA and LUNG drs never to use Vick's . It help get rid of

mucus but it thicker with Vick's. With the inability to cough anyway it only

makes matters worse. I was told to always use Rubitussin and drink plenty of

fluids. I never take any chances with colds or flue I visit the doctor right

away. Hope you'll be feeling well soon and Seasons Greetings to everybody.

I had aspirated a piece of meat. I ended up with an abscess the size of a softball in my right lung. I was in ICU for 4 days. Nearly killed me. I had reoccurring infections for 8 years.

All in all I have been hospitalized 4 times with pneumonia due to aspiration.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>.

I would question as to how much preparation went into doing these. It very well

could be that she is suffering from Herxheimer's syndrome. It is a condition

where the body may become overloaded with various toxins from various sources

like dieing parasites to just the release of toxins from fat cells.

A coffee enema is an extremely powerful liver stimulation method and can

certainly bring on some very uncomfortable conditions. It can be likened to

doing an overload of exercise to try to acquire a muscular physic in a very

short period of time. It causes various other problems similar to the muscles

reactions to extreme exercise without a proper buildup to the desired goal.

Elaborate what you mean by preparation?

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

What is meant by preparation has to do with realizing that the bowels and liver

are synerginically related, very much so. Cleansing the colon has a lot to do

with cleansing the liver and if it is in trouble then doing a coffee enema is

going to stimulate the liver to cleanse too.

Coffee enemas are for the liver cleansing process and not so much for the

bowels. It is like going to the max in the liver cleansing process to have done

a coffee enema before doing enemas to simply clear the bowels and still gently

stimulate the liver to do its job and help it in doing so.

Liver dumps, those actions that occur once the bowels are clear of matter will

be of various colors and may in one dump be dark and another may be florecent.

This is when the liver has started to clear excesses of toxins in it. Generally

speaking it is an enduced diarrhea.

The process of having diarrhea is the body's attempt to clear itself of various

toxins that may have entered the body and of which the liver is attempting to

get out as fast as it can. Consider the time of the gurgle that is felt and the

act of the movement. The distance the matter dumped from the liver is pushed by

the small intestines to the large intestines is around 22 to 26 feet. Think of

pushing a ball with a Tee stick 20 feet and how fast you can do that and it

should help to visualize what the small intestines is doing wth the watery

matter.

What needed to be done before doing an enema containing such a strong stimulant

for the liver would have been a diet of foods that will help in getting it to be

prepared for such a dynamic cleansing action.

What types of foods? Foods for the liver are those that help it and will help

the body in general. A great book regarding the liver and its cleansing as well

as a diet by which to do so is " The Liver Cleansing Diet " by Dr. Cabot.

http://www.liverdoctor.com/ The information contained in her book has helped me

to keep my gallbladder when my doctor wanted me to have it removed in 1999. The

type of foods of which contain essential fatty acids and are void of saturated

and trans fats goes a long way towards getting the liver prepared, not to

mention it is also a great weight control process too without having to deal

wtih Herxhiemer's reaction. Hydrogenated foods are to be avoided like a plague.

However, although having a lot of saturated fat, avacados are quite alright to

eat because of the type of saturated fat that is acquired from them.
