Guest guest
Hi Ali, At the DD Nurses Conference this week one of the topics was Constipation in Persons with I/DD: A Problem with Consistency, Frequency, or Both. A chart that was available was the Bristol Stool Form Scale. I checked online and find most of the information at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bristol_Stool_Scale . Mayo Clinic has a chart re the color of stools at http://www.mayoclinic.com/print/stool-color/AN00772/METHOD=print you can find more links by putting in color of stools in your search engine. Mucus in stools is explained on another Mayo Clinic link http://www.mayoclinic.com/print/mucus-in-stool/AN01296/METHOD=print . If you want a more intense color of the stools on the Bristol Stool Scale go to http://www.ghchealth.com/bristol-stool-scale.html it also explains about the odor and mucus. Hope this helps. I was just a little concerned about the black stringy mucus. She doesn't have a fever. She does have stomach cramps which she has had for a few days now - since increasing her dose of valproic acid. I will keep an eye on her and see how the weekend goes. Thanks again. Ali Sara Cohen < <mailto:pastmidvale%40gmail.com> pastmidvale@...> wrote: Ok. I will take a shot at it. IF I recall, your daughter is tube fed - thus diet is easy to control. IF she is not haveing diarrhea - more coming out than going in, and no fever, I would try diet and think impaction. First: Could she be impacted or constipated? Overflow would look like occasional loose stool. Could be foul smelling due to time to build bacteria. Also foul smelling stool could be infection, BUT if there is no other sign of illness - irritability, fever, stomach cramps, I would try a day of diet. Rice water, rice, mashed potatoes, clear liquid (anything one can see thru at rooom temperature, bananas. IF that doesn't clear things up THEN I would discuss it with her primary healthcare provider.
