Rhabdomyolysis

I developed rhabdomyolysis after participating in a 3-day certification seminar.

The seminar was a " bootcamp " style program that was competitive and intense. I

was an invited guest and was not physically prepared for three days of high rep

exercise. On the third day, my muscles shut down and I could no longer continue.

Four days later, got up to go to the toilet and collapsed and had to be

transported to the hospital. My blood pressure was 80/60 and my urine volume was

about 100 ml (black). At the time, I thought I was suffering from a vaccination

reaction. Unfortunately, my physician didn't measure CK or myoglobin, but he did

check me into the hospital and gave me IV fluids. In retrospect, I'm pretty sure

it was rhabdomyolysis.

I am an exercise physiology professor, masters athlete, and experienced coach. I

should have known better. Sixty year old guys have no business trying to compete

against 20 something personal trainers. A family physician in my town told me

that he has seen 6 cases of rhabdomyolysis in the past year stemming from people

participating in overzealous workouts. If this could happen to me, it could

happen to anyone. We need to get the word out about the dangers of severe

overtraining.

Question for the group: what are the chances that I will have long-term side

effects from this incident?
