Hi Janye,

I was just sitting back and listening to the emails and I wanted

to share with you this.

Sometimes we can get too wrapped up in the whole legal iep process that we

lose focus on what

is important and what we really need to see happen for our child. Follow

your gut and do what

you feel is best for your child. Thinking from a logical point of view yes

it does seem like it would be

useful to have his current teacher there because she knows your child and

where he is etc. Also

it certainly is smart of you to request that a teacher (does not have to be

his assigned teacher

from the grade he is going into) be there as well. Because as you said you

want to know what a typical day

will be like for him and what to expect for your child. Also, the

suggestion to talk with another parent

who has a child there to find out about specials sounds like a very good

one.

Too often we think that because our child is diffrent or special ed we don't

have the same rights as typical

parents and we forget they would ask the exact same question(What is a

typical day like? What and when do they have specials, can I meet some of the

teachers?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with that and you don't need to hide or

be discreet about it.

I would not act, think like the martyr but like a parent. Believe that your

childs needs will be met

try to stay positive and believe that everyone is there to help and follow

what your gut (or I say the holy

spirit) which is in you tells you is good. You know your child and where

there are and what they need to

have a good school year. I hope you have a wonderful teacher for your child

and that as you strive to have

faith in the desires of your heart for you child that you will fiind them

manifested. Sincerely

I approached the IEP process completely differently this year. I did

have Kayla's 1:1 aide attend the PRE-IEP meeting that I called. I

asked everyone (all her therapists, teachers, school principal) to

attend an informal meeting so we were all on the same page before we

went to the actual IEP meeting with the IEP Committee Chariman. Then

at the actual IEP meeting we just had the school principal,

independent ABA teacher, and Kayla's service coordinator attend since

we had worked out any problems ahead of time and everything just

needed to be approved by the committee chair.

You can request - and they can refuse.

Of course it boils down to $$$$ and who's going to pay the ed tech to

be there!

What about if I ask the Ed Tech to write down her concerns, etc.. and

I present them at the meeting?? Or I have her write them down and

present them to me and I digest them and state " my " concerns at the

meeting?

I'm just not as prepared for this IEP as I usually am. I hate that

we have to switch schools again and I haven't put a child through the

new school or 3rd grade in this district.

I'm starting to wonder about putting in his home school with

a 1:1 wouldn't give me a better outcome! I would only want to do

that if his current Ed Tech was THE 1:1! Course I can't guarantee

that!

The district is telling J's Ed Tech that she has to apply for ESY and

that she may not even work there - let alone work with J! Why the

games? Why fix it if it ain't broke?

Seniority and money are the answers! As to switiching - if you need to

switch schools, why not evaluate what is closest to you so you can " be

available " more easily. Also, neighbors kids can help protect JAckson.

It was a neighbor's kid who let me know that Elie wa being mistreated in

third grade. Third graders have an understanding of what is right and

wrong! And they tell!! This never would have happened if he had been at

school cross town.

You can distill what the ed tech thinks and give it as your own input. Then

you can request (demand) that it be put in the IEp. You want to work on

academic goals broken down into little pieces so that ANY ed tech can carry

them out.

Jayne,

You can request Joe blow off the street if you want. I would probably want her

there as well. She knows better than most and can attest to his

strengths and weaknesses. I have had our behavior special, aid, etc at IEPs and

it has not been a big deal.

Hi Holly -

This is my beef! According to my regs, I can invite who I want as long as they

have knowledge or special expertise about the child. Gee, I think that his Ed

Tech who spends probably at least 5.5 of the 6.5 hours of his school day with

him would qualify there!

I think their beef is not wanting to pay her to be there. It's afterschool at

3pm. Do I ask her if she is willing to come for 'free'?

I emailed her last night and asked her to send me her input - the good, the bad,

and the ugly just in case.

Thanks Holly -
