Re: Can you make microgreens out of chickpeas?

Carolyn:

From what I've read, chickpeas are Garbanzos. And Garbanzo beans do not SHOOT

UP, they just sprout. My landlord wanted to know if they would SHOOT UP like

the pea shoots.

From what I read, garbanzos or other beans (like mung beans) don't shoot up

(when planted in soil). She has soil, she uses soil. She now does pea shoots.

But while looking at the peas on the bottom of the shoots, to all the italians

around here they look like chickpeas.

No matter what I say, they think I'm sprouting chickpeas. I tried showing them

the bag of organic peas. Didn't matter. They all said " no, those are chickpeas " .

So one of them asked me " Hey, we have dried chickpeas, can we get them to shoot

up like the peas? "

So before I go and tell them to plant the Chickpeas in soil I want to tell them

what they can expect.

Thanks to anyone who can answer this. I watched a video on youtube and the lady

said to soak overnight and rinse and drain 2 x a day and you'll have little

tails.

The people around here don't want little tails, they want SHOOTS.

There are several issues with trying to grow shoots from garbonzoes (chickpeas)

First, they contain an enzyme inhibitor and will only grow a tail as soakers.

They need deep, rich soil to grow as a plant, so finding a balance to grow them

as shoots is not likely...but can be done. The trouble is, the enzyme

inhibitors require that they be cooked, so growing them as a shoot is a moot

point. You CAN easily grow them as a PLANT though, allowing them to grow to

their full potential, then harvesting the fresh pods and using those, but

cooking is still required for removing the enzymes. I grow them every few

years...I prefer other types of beans, so don't grow them often, but they are

easy enough to grow.

" Just because you can grow any seed into a shoot doesn't mean that every seed

should be shooted. "

I just read your response to Carolyn, so now I understand more clearly what you

are asking. Garbanzos like any other seed will make a shoot. The real question

is whether it is worth the time and effort. Most modern asian cooking uses pea

tendrils. But of have never heard of any Italian or middle eastern chefs using

any part of the garbanzo plant other than the seeds as food. So my guess is that

it is simply unpalatable. Tell your landlord to test a small batch and see for

herself and report back the results, I would like to know.

I made up the top quote for people who are new to this technology and just like

a kid with a new toy gun they have to shoot everything.

The quote was good. The analogy was even better!!!

Ah. I get it. Thanks so much.

No chickpeas will be shooting up in the backyard.

My bean sprouts had some garbanzos in them, I believe.   I do know when I bit

a few bean sprouts they tasted bad but I didn't cook them.

I wonder if we wanted to grow them if a container would be large enough to put

them in potting soil or if a ft. deep or so would be deep enough.  I wonder why

we just plant seeds instead of soaking them overnight and then planting them.

Seems that if they need the water that they would be off to a better life if we

soaked them before we put them in the ground as well as if we were sprouting

them.

I have little leaves sticking up out of the baskets in the Aerogarden.  The

flowers aren't as far along as the others so  I put a reflector on that one as

it may have weak bulbs in it as it was a used one.  When new bulbs come in I

may replace them some morning.  I just don't usually get up that early and it

resets them to come on at that time when they are unplugged.  I will certainly

unplug them before changing lights.  Next Wed. is probably a week for them.

They don't look like a lot right now with just 3 or 4 leaves peeking up.  I can

hardly wait until I can pick them and make me a salad.

Yeah, they are the same.  I know nothing about chick peas except that you use

them for hummus.  I did see a recipe for a sprouted chick pea though.  I think

it was on youtube.  I'll have to try to find it again.  I'll check to see if I

have the recipe as that would be easier to find.  I am not sure if they would

have called something with just little tails as sprouted chick peas or not.

I'll get back.
